Very old news actually, but this software isn't known by a lot of people at all.

http://www.beatpoints.com/cherrytomato/

Give it a try! It's increased my productivity by roughly 60%.

The basic idea of this program is to break your work into small "pomodoro sessions". Each session lasts 25 minutes, and during this time, the program tracks everything you do (how much time you spend in every program, keystrokes, mouse movement). When the 25 minutes are over, you have to stop your work and it gives you a summary on what you were doing in which program for how long. You can then score yourself on how productive you were, and over time you can get a sense of your overall productivity.

The new version actually doesn't do any activity tracking. You still get to score yourself, but there aren't any exact details on your session. I'm still using the alpha version, not the beta version.

The idea behind this software is great, but the ticking noise completely decimates the usability of this software... Sure, I could mute the computer, but that gets rid of the possibility of listening to music while working. Any way to turn off that sound that you know of?

You're right, this new version is really crappy.

I've attached the old version to the first post.

Their website is very streamlined.

The ticking is very, very annoying. Maybe a tone or something every couple minutes. Not 5 ticks per second!

http://localhost:8100/Settings.htm This is a pretty clever way to control the settings. I assume you can do this via any networked computer, xbox, ps3, etc. Although, I'm not sure how effective the scoring would be if you were not at the computer it is running on for it to track application usage, etc.

Edit: Thanks for the old version!

Ah, I also learned of a feature I had never known of before; selectively muting programs with Windows 7.

I actually tried the Pomodoro technique when I was in my third year at university and it was productive. When I did it I had a plugin for Google Chrome that basically disabled all of my distracting websites during the periods I was supposed to work. It was a pretty neat tool.

Might give Cherry Tomato a try, not seen it before.

Another useful anti-procrastination tool, which is useful for writers is called 'Write or Die', basically what you do is you set yourself a target, a time limit, a warning and a grace period for that warning and what it'll do is push you into a continuous writing session where you're not permitted to stop, except for those little grace periods (basically useful for thinking). It also has a mode called 'Kamikaze Mode', which starts deleting words if you stop typing for too long. Naturally I love the tool, kamikaze mode is perfectly wicked.

It's under "volume mixer" but only Win7 up, maybe in Vista too, iirc. Pretty sure though XP's mixer only gave the channels.

...Wait, does anybody still use XP

Seems to for Winamp & others.

Ooh, that means I can start putting up pseudo-intellectual quotes too.
"The world is a place within a space"
"The world exist, do you?"
"I am the world, the world is me. We are the dream, floating on the child."
"Procrastination: the thing that fuels ideas and stifles production"

I'm getting good! What was this thread about again? Right, procrastination. Well in that case I'll post something meaningful:

...tomorrow.
