Any good free ones out there?

I thought I remember a programming language I found awhile back that would output HTML5 code, but I can't remember what it was.

I tried going through the HTML5 canvas course at Udacity, but frankly the course was completely useless.

Any idea where I should start?

Well, it's more like a game creation tool than a programming interface but still a powerful HTML5 engine:
Construct 2

And I think GameMaker by Yoyo Games can export to HTML5 too...

I would reccomend this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/JavaScript-The-Definitive-Guide-Guides/dp/0596805527/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361526489&sr=8-1

This is how I learned HTML5 canvas. It has quite a nice section on the 2D Canvas API
It quite a big book though. It starts off with a massive Javascript tutorial. Then it shows you how to use all the common client side APIs, such as Canvas, jQuery, WebWorkers, WebSockets, Audio, etc. Then theres a big reference section listing many of the classes in JS and the above APIs and what functions they have, etc

If you want a 3D game engine, I would reccomend Three.js

Construct 2 crashed Chrome somehow the second I tried to launch it.

I'm surprised nobody said Freedom Engine.(which has a terrible website btw)

Didn't they ditch Freedom Engine? No-one wants to use a product that has no future.

Try Construct 2, I have that and it comes with plug in behaviours, which is nice.

I think LibGDX allows you to export as HTML5.

Either that, you could adapt one of the existing HTML5 rendering libraries into a game engine. A few examples of 2D engines:

KineticJS, PaperJS, EaseJS, oCanvas

Or if you want to write 3D games, take a look at three.js.

Failing all that, you could write your own engine from scratch. I've written my own 2D rendering engine for HTML5 stuff. If you are familiar with state based rendering, its not a tricky task.

Monkey language from Blitz Research can output to HTML5 target, and that is part of the free demo (but not for commercial purposes). Otherwise all the targets are $99.

Too bad about freedom engine, perhaps the world was not ready for such a concept.
