I know the subject sounds ridiculous and pretty ludicrous, BUT after reading this article: http://reason.com/blog/2013/03/01/pop-tart-pistol-7-year-old-gets-suspende
I began to think things are just a bit ridiculous... I mean, yeah. Gun control is good. Schools need it, but now they're starting to ban all likeness of a guns.
I mean this kid was suspended for two days, just because he accidentally ate his pop tart into the shape of a gun. Here awhile back, a kid was expelled from school for bringing a tiny inch long toy gun that went with one of his GI Joe action figures to school. Another case: A little girl was punished severely for bringing a little Hello Kitty bubble gun to school.
Apparently this Pop Tart incident isn't one of a kind. It's apparently happening everywhere now.
They're basically making it impossible to have a childhood these days because we all live in fear of guns.
So what do you guys think? Did they take appropriate action? Or is it pretty darn silly?
I look forward to your opinions.

Don't bring guns to school or anything like it, its that easy!
...and dont play with your food.

And yes its silly... but it also raises other questions like:

Why are children able to get access to actual firearms that there is something like "gun control (!) in schools" in 2013?
I don't mean teenagers, I know that you live in a country where civilians can pack heat like dirty harry but come on: How hard can it be to keep your pre-teenage child from "borrowing" daddys AR15 collection?

Why are you posting something thats clearly going in a political direction in a forum that frowns upon such a thing?
I say this because I forsee the "guns" discussion we had a few months ago.

Why are teachers that suspend children for something as trivial as this from a school allowed to teach? Isn't it obvious that people who overreact like this are not suitable to teach young children?

Why am I still awake and surfing the internet at 03:18 in the night?

The question is why did the kid feel he needed a pastry gun in the first place? Thank god one of the teachers found him before something serious happened. This makes me very concerned about the type of food that is being served in our schools, if these pastries can be fashioned into weapons so easily surely they are not safe for children and should be banned.

I think the real problem here is the term "breakfast pastry".

I agree with Obese. I think also, the capital 'L' should be replaced. Notice that if you rotate it 90 degrees clockwise, it looks like a gun. Think what would happen if some kid got hold of an 'L' from a sign or something and pointed it at another kid. It would be a disaster waiting to happen.

@Zotoaster - I would agree but I think we should start with F's first, they look a bit like assault rifles which are far more dangerous. If we can get those off the streets then maybe we can start to remove the L's too. We might get some support from the religious right if we propose to ban B's too since they look vaguely like a pair of breasts.

Right. Then we can tackle the 'T's before people start pretending they're hammers. If this goes to plan, we'll be using the chinese writing system before you can say uncle!

When I was in 5th grade, like 9yr old or something, I pointed my finger like a gun at someone and pretended to shoot them. It was just a game, but the teacher flipped out on my and sent me out into the hall. I didn't understand what the big deal was.

I think the school overreacted, just as my teacher did. Yes kids know what guns are, but they don't understand the social implications a figurative gun can have. So rather than punish, they should explain to the child what it's not appropriate.

Keep in mind, this is also the generation in which some schools don't allow marking wrong answers with red ink anymore because red is deemed too negative on the child.
