I have wondered this for years, and it seems that research won't tell me how they work. Basically, I'm wondering how those slots work that allow you to click the SD card in, and then push on the SD card again to click it back out. The same mechanisms seem to be used for things like NDS game card slots, and a few other card things seem to use it. Anyone know how these work? I'd greatly appreciate if someone could explain it.

Pick up a ballpoint pen, click it. Now click it again. Take apart the pen and figure it out. I don't know if that's how the slots work but I have an external.

Got any card readers laying around you could take apart?

Ah, I have tried to figure out how the mechanism of a click pen and the SD card slot would relate, but then you have the issue of the mechanism grabbing onto the card as well.

I don't have one I could take apart, but I could order a a slot online for maybe a dollar.

It doesn't grab the card. My laptop has a push-push card slot and once it's pushed it I can still pull the card out without having to push it again. All the mechanism does is provide an easier way to reach the card to pull it out. (and no im not taking my laptop apart to take pics)

Actually, that makes a lot of sense. I have noticed how easy it is to pull out before, and I have attributed that to the specified 4 newtons release force on the mechanisms that do hold the cards (according to a spec I was having a look at once), but what you said makes far more sense!
