This is a question for all the longtime regulars. Many years ago, circa 2000-2002 I would guess, TGC took part in a weekend challenge where they had 24 hours or so to develop a game. The chosen category by the contest holder was a top-down racing game.

There was an active forum thread at the time with members discussing its progress, and a blog with hourly updates from Lee and the gang. Every couple hours Lee would upload a new prototype to play until the final product was unveiled. I distinctly remember criticism from the community about it having to be a top-down (thus not really showcasing the 3D power of DB) and a secret flag or toggle Lee added to turn it into a 3D first person mode.

I have absolutely no idea where any of this went and can't find any trace of it online. I don't remember what company was sponsoring it, and think it was before TGC even started the newsletter or had this domain. Years ago I lost all of my original DB/DBPro files and have been trying to rediscover this one for awhile. I would enjoy seeing it again for nostalgia reasons and because I found that event quite inspirational for one reason or another. Anyone else remember it?

Was it maybe PC Gamer? - something like that, it was for a magazine I'm sure of it.

I won't have it, it's been so long since I even saw my old DB stuff.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

You're good, Van B! It was for PC Gamer UK. After much digging, I managed to find a single archived copy of the "blog" TGC ran during the 24 hour competition.

Unfortunately, all graphics, code snippets, and downloads are gone for good and I couldn't find a single other reference that has them. Somewhere deep in the abyss of DB history I'm sure someone still has these on their computer... Hmm.

Here is the link to the blog about it with hourly updates:

Not quite as exciting with no media. But at least I know what it was now.

Edit: I found a ZIP download of the game itself on an old Chinese file website (attaching here). I get "Error 38" whenever I try to run it on XP or Windows 7 so it may be missing files.

Edit 2: I'm an idiot! After all this, I dug out my original Darkbasic case and found the demo disc included. This contained all of the files I was after, safe and sound
