This is driving me nuts. All I want to do is copy a file into the "program files" folder but I don't have permission apparently. UAC is off, I've logged in as administrator, but I don't even have enough rights to change permissions on the folders inside. WTH!

Try having a search for some Unlocker programs ... I remember I used one a few years back but I can't remember what it was called.

The alternative would be to burn a Linux boot disk, boot into a live session, mount your NTFS parts, and then repair the permissions from there.

I've tried using psexec to load explorer with system privileges amongst a few other tricks, but it seems impossible to get any kind of write permission to those folders in windows 7.

I have a linux live cd but frankly at this point its more trouble than its worth.

I feel the exact same thing, right now I have 15gb of windows folders from my old installation which I can't remove because windows permissions thing seems to just be based on filenames. And 2 days ago windows just downright blocked AppGameKit from compiling one project. Not the other ones, just ones with the same name.

You can get a registry editor that adds an Administrator function called "Take Control." I used this to wipe my old install when I upgraded to Windows 8.

I think all that does is add a shortcut method to me manually going into the security/ownership menus myself. I'll try it, but I don't think it'll work.

Yup, didn't do squat.

Also you should try to open exe with a notepad using "open with"; it may fix registry.

Don't use Windows. Use Doors, that OS gives you better control over your files. I tried walls once but it had no user interface at all.

Huh. Worked perfectly fine for me, opened a Command Line window that changed the ownership from Trusted Installer to my account.
