I'm already going to BronyCon, where I have the honour of presenting my game PonyCraft, and Buckcon. Thanks for the heads up though, I really do appreciate it!

Since this thread is about me, who thinks I overdid it with the ponies? And who wants me to stop?

Actually, what do you all even think about this strange idea of watching technicolour ponies experiencing the magic of friendship, and then dressing up in fursuits and going to conventions?

No. I just thought that was the stereotype a non-Brony would imagine.

Erm, I can see why people think it's weird because it was a program designed for young girls, which would seem pretty creepy. I mean, particularly when you find the media obsesses with things like pedophilia, so it probably helps make it creepy. But as a teenager I enjoyed the Powerpuff Girls because I enjoyed it as a cartoon. But I think today if somebody said, "I want to be a kids' TV presenter" people are probably more likely to think that creepy, particularly in light of cases like Jimmy Saville, but some people generally like to entertain kids or like being with kids in a totally non-dodgy way. Likewise, somebody can enjoy kids TV without being a weirdo.

With Bronies, I think it was just simply a case of people discovering they enjoyed something and I am sure there was the novelty of it being My Little Pony and it having the shock factor, which probably made people draw attention to it more. However, there's a lot of series out there that have a big following and things people obsess over. Should the fact I own a DeathNote be any different to somebody with a MLP hat? Or the fact I have a Darth Malgus collectable on my windowsill be any different to somebody with Twilight Sparkle instead?

People cosplay too, people go to Trekkie conventions dressed as Spock and others go to anime conventions - many of which involve cross dressing. People go to gaming conventions dressed as Master Chief. There's a high level of geekery in the world and given MLP attracts a geek crowd it's only natural geeky obsessions would follow.

But I don't think it's weird or creepy, I suspect there are the genuinely creepy, but same applies to any of these kinds of conventions, but you can't judge a population based on the creepy few.

I think it's weird that it has become almost a cult. The show itself is okay I guess, nothing too special from what I saw but it's not bad either. An ex-housemate introduced me to/forced me to watch Gilmore Girls and after a while I got quite into it. That was a pretty inane girly show too so I can understand getting hooked on it, but I don't understand the need to identify as a special fan of the show because you're not in the immediate target demographic, or go to conventions. (Do they even have Gilmore Girls conventions? ) I don't see what's so great about it, I get the feeling that the whole craze is some ironic joke that I don't understand.

There are weirdos in the brony ranks. This is the problem when mainstream opinion dubs anything "weird", it becomes a great place for creepy, genuinely messed up, people to hide out (like TheComet ) and they feel like their strange fetishes for horses and furry costumes are normal and the stigma they get is all just the same as the "a guy watching a girly show is weird" opinion.

I'm convinced that this thing happens with paedophilia. We all know that there are some damn good looking 15/16 year old girls out there, but this is a taboo and gets labelled as paedophilia. So the real paedophiles who like 4 year olds must think that it's all the same and everyone feels the same way about 4 year olds as them, it's just hidden because it's taboo.

The difficulty in learning is not acquiring new knowledge but relinquishing the old.

As far as cult goes, we see it with a lot of shows, comic books and video games, geeks tend to obsess over things they enjoy. The trekkies have done it for years and other obsessions have followed. For example I am Final Fantasy nerd, though I don't cosplay or go to conventions, but then one day I might, I would like to go to one. Heck I wanted to go to the FF concert that was touring not so long ago, it was based on the music from the games.

For MLP fans I don't think it's different, I think it's just a side effect of being a geek.

I watch the Big Bang Theory, and the guys sometimes like to dress up in geeky costumes, but Rainbow Ponies? The reply to that is a thread locker for sure.

I think it's in part a desire to be part of a group, but also to be 'alternative' (since liking a children's tv show is certainly different). I don't think it's down to people being obsessed with the show like some are with Star Trek, because unlike Star Trek there isn't really much in MLP that would appeal to a mature adult.

Well - i can undderstand what you mean - however, I personally see it as.. well - being a fan of a show simply put - you can easily see many anime fans being comepltly crazy about their stuff x)

I'm not crazy about the fandom - but I do sit every saturday waiting for the new episode to come out ^^

and - atleast from my side, i cant speak fro the fandom as a whole - it's not an ironic joke x)

Pedophilia is actually the attraction to prepubescent children, not teenagers. It's certainly wrong (at least in western culture) to be with a much younger teenage girl - but it doesn't make you a pedophile. Mis-labeling someone as a pedophile can be very damaging.

I'm not quite sure how we went from ponies to pedophilia, but perhaps we should just drop this one?

Well, for me it's about the fandom, and the people. It's a very accepting and tolerating place to be, and the people I've met in real life are awesome, too. There are some creeps, but don't they exist in every fandom?
