Do developers just not understand the simple difference between sync and a merge? I stopped syncing my contacts with windows address book because it screwed up every time. I moved to google to sync my phone contacts. Well it's almost as bad. Rather than replace contact info with the newer data, it simply merges them together, thus leaving me with several contacts with multiple numbers. Now I don't know which number is the current one. And any contacts that had the same name now had their info merged as well. So if I had 3 Bobs and one had an email specified, all Bob contacts now have that same email. This is so frustrating!

Sync should replace old data with newer updated data, not copy it along side the old stuff!

I'm surprised you are having issues, since I know others who sync'd contacts via Google/Exchange, but I didn't bother syncing contacts until iCloud came out (which I haven't had any issues with).

I'm assuming you want to use your address book on a Windows PC as well? iCloud would let you access them via iCloud.com and possibly sync with Microsoft Outlook, but if you are using a different app or webmail (other than iCloud mail of course) then it probably isn't the best option. If all you want is access for reference, the web interface for iCloud might be sufficient.

All I want is somewhere to keep a backup of my contacts in the event I need to restore my phone or replace it. I might just stick to copying the sql db directly from the phone.

If that's all you want iCloud should do it perfectly. You can sync your contacts with iCloud and enable iCloud Backup to backup your photo roll and any documents you may have on the phone (much like an iTunes backup). And if you decide to switch from the iPhone you can still get them off of iCloud.com and export them as vCards which I believe most services should be able to import.

I use iCloud to sync contacts, calendars, notes, documents etc between my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, and haven't had any duplication issues except for a few odd ones involving Notes where changes were made to a particular note before it had received changes made on another device.

This Apple page should walk you through everything you need: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
