Does anyone know why graphics, music, sound effects, scenery, even monsters, etc, seem very similar in the two games? Were the same developers, artists, composers, etc, used at some point? I've Googled both but can't see an obvious direct connection between them (other than content and a loose historical connection).

[Edit: I'd better make it clear that I'm talking about Heroes of Might and Magic V compared with Kings Bounty: The Legend. ]

@Seditious, thread title says HOMM5 vs KB (obviously 2007)

@Green Gandalf, the answer is no. Both were made in Russia and that's all. It's like Warcraft 3 and Armies of Exigo, looks the same but different games.

Yes I have - but I added a correction to my original post. I was referring to Kings Bounty: The Legend not the original version of Kings Bounty.

I find that hard to believe because they are very similar - unless everyone in Russia composes the same style of music, same way of using the music, same style of landscape, same way of ending a battle scene, same style of strange monsters, etc, etc. Perhaps one was simply copying the style of the other?

Whatever the truth of the matter, I enjoy both games - no awkward fumbling with rapid keystrokes, mouse clicks, etc . More importantly, I can wander off and make a cup of coffee without having to worry about whether I pressed the pause key.

Yes, I know they are not identical - but still very similar. I simply wondered whether there was more to the resemblance than merely similar styles. I guess game creators copy each other more than I expected.

Also no guys from Katauri never worked in Nival. And HOMM V composers are Rob King and Paul Romero, that always worked for MM universe. You think that they are the same because they are turn-based wacky fantasy games with dragons and hero on a horse.

P.S.

No no no. I have the artbook and music CDs. No.

IN-BETWEEN P.S.: I wanted to upload here a HOMMV artbook for you, but it is way more than 100 MB.

P.P.S. but of course KB was the "mother" of both series.

fairly sure it would be illegal aswell - Not entirely sure but, you do have to get the game - or more specifically limited edition(or something like that) for it?
(just saying as in 90% of the cases that's the way it is)

Possibly. But perhaps they both use familiar images, characters and ideas from Russian folklore which makes them seem more similar, to a non-Russian audience, than they really are.

Original gameplay design and fantasy style for both games was done by Jon van Caneghem, that's why they look similar. That is like two forks of one idea. But no russian folklore, fantasy set is classic: eastern europe, arabic and some asian (like in HOMM6) folklores. Dragons, skeletons and peasants are exist in every folklore.

So I am sure that both games are different, but when I am saying that, I have some doubts. Damn you, Caneghem!

No. The recent versions are very different from the originals. Basic turn-based game play is the same but the graphics have moved on a lot from the original low resolution 2D graphics so I was initially surprised that the two strands were still very similar despite having different authors. But, as you say, the themes are quite standard now.

It appears that your simple question could be a thesis for a Doctor's degree (art and design section).
