Hi All!

The good news (for me) is that I am moving to Anchorage, Alaska to start a permanent, full time (paying) job doing 'computer stuff' for the Alaska Railroad.

The bad news is that this means that I won't be anywhere near as present in these forums. Currently, I have a browser open with tabs to most of the AppGameKit forums and check it all day long (as some of you may have noticed). Once I relocate, I'll have to split my evenings and weekends between chores and hobbies.

I will get my WIP out (as soon as the last few levels are done) and I will continue to try and develop AppGameKit based stuff (it is fun and makes a good hobby).

My hubby and I have made 8 trips to Alaska and thoroughly fell in love with it by the fourth. By the fifth, we were determined to move there. On the last trip we even decided to do it by driving up in an RV (which we purchased shortly after the trip). Now, my hubby gets to make the trip (with our cats) while I start my new job.

I won't be totally gone. But I also won't be able to do 'interactive' help for extended periods of time either.

Cheers,
Ancient Lady

Alaska is just the sort of place I'd emigrate to, good luck with the move!

I wouldn't worry too much about your projects, I'm guessing that the more time you spend away from AppGameKit, the more ideas you'll have, you'll have less time to work on them but be more efficient, so it'll balance out I'm sure.

I'm a helluva lot more active on the forums while at work, than I am when I get home, strange and unprofessional I know... maybe the forum is the only thing keeping me from snapping

I am the one who knocks...

Man, the Alaska Railroad is so lucky

They should not really be allowed to just take you away from us like that without reasonable compensation or a replacement Ancient Lady.

Good to know you will still be around from time to time, thanks for helping me out, many times, in the past

That sounds awesome. Don't be apologetic! Go and live life! Coding games is just escapism. If I never saw you back here because you were too busy enjoying the amazing Alaska wilderness then I wouldn't blame you and I'd consider that time better spent.

Now to quickly compile a list of questions for you to answer before you leave ...

Edit: Btw, you might need a coat.

Congratulations on the job. From what I've seen on TV, Alaska looks like an amazing place to live. Even colder than Scotland in the winter! I hope you'll post some pictures so we can all share a little in your adventure.

The AppGameKit forums won't quite be the same with your reduced presence.

Thank you, everyone.

In case anyone wants to see some of our Alaskan travels (and others), I created a site to share our trips (and I am soooo far behind getting the trip last August up on line).

I have a great Land's End coat rated to -60 Fahrenheit. It doesn't get that cold in Anchorage. But it is possible when we go to Coldfoot Camp (where we've gone to get the Aurora pictures).

We are excited about the move. Naturally, we have a long overdue and long booked trip to Australia (visiting family) starting on the 9th until the end of the month. This gives me this week and about 2 weeks after we get back to prepare for Alaska.

While waiting for my car to be winterized this morning, I was 'testing' my WIP. One of the features of the WIP is that it shows the developer's best time as a challenge. I managed to beat myself in four different levels. So, I need to update that value on those levels. I have fun testing.

Congrats on the new job and location, AL! Having a stable income (and presumably decent benefits) can be a nice feeling especially if it's in a location you love--I say that having quit my previous fulltime job over a year ago to jumpstart my own business which certainly has ups and downs, lol.

I'm still very much looking forward to your game and hope it does well! We'll still see you around I'm sure once you get settled in your new home and job.

Take care, and thanks for all your work!

Thank you, everyone.

It's been 9 years since I was actually employed by someone other than myself. It took about three years to get myself well established doing what I was doing (creating/fixing web sites). Then I finally started to make enough to cover the business expenses and pay myself something (not a lot, but something). Then the market tanked for everyone in the business. Many of my clients have really suffered. Now, it will be my turn to take care of my hubby while he tries something new.

It's a new adventure, and we all wish you all the best. I doubt if you'll abandon us - the nights are very dark in Alaska - and you may miss your needy friends across the world. They'll certainly miss your patience and hard work in supporting the project(s).

Keep the trains running! And keep us in touch.

Well done on the new job! It's good to hear that you've found an awesome place to move to as well. I don't know a lot about Alaska other than there's a lot of snow. Make the very best of it!

You'll have to set up a system for us to book consultation time with you.

There's lots of snow in the Winter. But Spring and Summer in Anchorage is fairly mild and very nice. A whole lot cooler than the regular 90+ temps with 60+ humidity here in Virginia. You can always bundle up more to get warm. You can only get so naked to get cool (and not naked at all in public).

Who knows? Once I get really established in my job, I might have time in the evenings and weekends for consulting (when not doing chores or hobbies).

I am actually looking forward to working face to face with real human beings again.

Thank you george++.

Many years ago, while still working in The Netherlands, my hubby and I took a Greek cruise with my children (who flew over for it from both sides of the USA). They got to share in making a dream of mine come true. Back in the 3rd grade my teacher did a section on Greece and we made dioramas of different parts. I did the Parthenon. And it became my dream to visit it some day. I got that chance (and we walked up, of course) and my children shared it with me. We all enjoyed our time in Greece very much. The ruins full of cats was a bit of a surprise.

I've been to Greece at least once a year for over 30 years. It's probably the antithesis of Alaska, which I'm sure is beautiful. For me, Greece is the ultimate battery charger. I have so many friends.

Don't know what the Inuit for "cheers" is AL, but no doubt you will find out. Meanwhile, Yammas Giorgo!

I might not be too good at that. I learn computer languages easily. People languages, not so much. Fortunately, English is the main language of Alaska.

MrValentine and MikeMax, we will probably have a variety of rifles once up there. If we go walking in the wilderness doing photography and animal spotting (one of the joys we discovered in Alaska), we will want to be ready to deal with bear and moose (which are actually more dangerous and cause more injuries than bears) if they see us before we see them.

Seeing moose in downtown anywhere in Alaska is not uncommon (except when they've been having bad years). And bears have been known to forage in town as well. Something we actually like and look forward to.

I hope that we find a house that is located just right. It needs to be relatively convenient to work. But we want a view and would love a place that animals roam into our back yard. I would love to see the first time our cats see a moose, fox, bear, anything big outside through the window. Our cats are purely indoor cats and will definitely stay that way in Alaska. They are perfect bear, wolf and coyote snack size.

I hope to be able to be here periodically. I suspect I'll be present in the evenings after work for the first few months until my hubby makes it up to help keep me warm.

xGEKKOx, I will try to be about to help if I can. It's not too bad getting set up in Android and getting things working.

And you will probably never see me on it. My Dad did try to talk me into homesteading with him in Alaska. So not happening.

My idea of roughing it these days is camping out in the heated RV with full bathroom and kitchen. I just don't do 'rough' anymore, I like my sleep too much.

There are some photos of various wildlife we have spotted on my travel site (www.triassictravel.com). I will have to make a section just for the ones we take once we are up there. Traveling about in the RV taking photos is one of our goals (for non-work time anyway).

Congratulations, Ancient Lady. Anchorage, Alaska is a beautiful place. I've been to Whitehorse and Yellowknife during rescue deployments- very beautiful scenery and the northern lights are spectacular. My wife has never been up north and had been asking about the northern lights. I've directed her to your pictures and she is like a kid at Christmas- counting down the days until we move to the northern country (either Northern Alberta or NWT). We leave the wet coast of BC in two years ourselves.

We both wish you and your husband the best of luck. Make sure you both get a chance to sit outside at night during winter- the lights are very nice to view while sharing a cup of hot chocolate. The star gazing is spectacular with the amount you see.

Thank you guys.

My husband plans to sell his old 10" telescope (and all the gear with it, including a complete computer control system). But he also has desires to get a newer, better one once we are up there. He might even build another observatory like the one we have in the back yard. It even has a rotating dome that opens (that part is going to be shipped with the rest of the house stuff while the rest of the observatory is going to be demolished). Yup, hot cocoa with a clear night sky sounds great. The trick will be finding a house far enough from city light pollution and close enough for my commute on a snowy day.

I also hope to be able to keep some sort of presence here. I like it.

I love the way people in this forum are spread across the entire planet; that, from all corners of the world we can wish AL well in her new adventure, and dearly wish that she will continue to provide the patient help and explanation - backed up by high professionalism - that she has selflessly given here.

@Giorgo - I've stopped island hopping (or Peleponesse-hopping) and been back to the same village on Kerkyra for five years. It is lovely to be told "You're not a tourist now - you're part of the family." I set one of my SF stories there, and I've nearly finished a new story with a heroine called Nafsika (although she's on a distant planet around a distant star). There's a tourist smile and a genuine hug and love when you get off the bus or taxi. I hear who's died, who's got married, and a thousand complaints about the government and the local administration.

I sincerely hope AL and her hubby (and cats) will find it a whole series of new challenges and joys. It's warmer in Greece. There are billions of cats, but not many bears!

Nice. Too bad you were not closer- I'd love to see his setup, as we were planning to do something similar in the area we are heading. Perhaps once we move and are settled we'll have to drop an email to you guys if we run into any issues or questions. Cathy [aka BlueFox] wants to take a trip up through Whitehorse and then over to Anchorage after we are settled from our move. We may just drop a message to you guys for any B&B's in the area.

Quote: " The trick will be finding a house far enough from city light pollution and close enough for my commute on a snowy day."

If Anchorage is anything like Whitehorse/Yellowknife, I'm certain there should be some homes outside of the city. As for the snowy commute, you join the rest of us with a slick mode of transportation- dog sled. And there are skidoos too if the dogs require a break.

Well we'd be happy to send you some snow, and a few polar bears.

With all our visits, we've never stayed in a B&B. My Mom runs one in Whately, Massachusetts. Not quite our cup of tea. We prefer not to deal with our 'hosts'. But, give me enough notice and I'll see what is about.

Whitehorse/Yellowknife are a bit less settled than Anchorage. But there are some nice areas south and north of town. On our last trip, we spent the last day (our flight was at 11pm) looking at open houses all over the place. I really wish we could afford the million dollar homes way up on the hill with the great view (and terrible commute to downtown Anchorage).

Quote: "Well we'd be happy to send you some snow, and a few polar bears."

Snow from Alaska is easy. For the Polar bears, you have to go way north. We still haven't seen any there (and we've been to Coldfoot Pass and further, 60-140 miles north of the Arctic Circle). We did see some great Polar bears (and lots of Beluga whales) in Churchill, Canada.

Quote: "The No. 2 spot is Anchorage, Alaska, which is "warmer than you think," making it an ideal spot for skiing, dogsledding or "skijoring" - cross-country skiing while being towed by a dog."

See? We're not crazy.

I know... This morning, it was a fine sunny day. Then the snow started. Then it kept on coming. Somehow, by 5:00 or so, it was horrible... dark, dreary, and wet. Welcome to central Ohio.

I do admit that playing in the 'huge' yard full of snow when I was a kid at Thanksgiving was great. But getting stuck for several hours on a highway in the snow with 7 people in the car going from Long Island to Toledo was not fun at all.

Thanks.

It really is almost the dream combination: living in Alaska and working for the railroad

The perfect one would be my hubby getting into the training program to become a driver on the train. He was asked to come up for an interview last year (after applying for the program) but they only gave him four days notice and he couldn't arrange it. Hopefully there are openings again this year.

Good news/no bad news!

Cynthia i hope you have a wonderful experience on all fronts! The industry needs people like you, experience with someone who clearly cares about what they do!

The forums will miss your input, but i am sure you will not vacate them.....will be a lesser place without you!

As for your WIP, they always say there is nothing like a deadline or lack of time to get stuff done....maybe this will push you even faster?

Anyhow, all of my best wishes for you and your family in your new ventures!

xCept, I will be in Alaska on 11-Jan-2014.

haliop and The Daddy, I will try to visit the forum as time allows. I may have a lot of free time in the evenings and weekends initially. I will be living in a hotel until my husband gets our house sold and drives up in the RV and we find a new home. Not much to do in a hotel room.

I have only had about one afternoon this week where I wasn't frantically trying to do things to get ready to move. But I did manage to finish another field and test it in all of the environments. One more field for this level needs to be designed/tested. Then the last level's fields have been drawn out and only need actual implementation. I might even be able to do some of that while traveling to/from Australia. My level editor will work on my travel laptop.

Lots of snow there? Well it's 90 Fahrenheit here! (31 Celsius)
Which is pretty cool for this time of year, normally it's around 105 Fahrenheit

Anyway, congrats! I always wanted to live near the snow, but that would mean finding a new continent

Thanks guys!

We just got back from Australia last night (we left here, Virginia, on the 11th).

It was a very nice visit with lots of friends and families with many stops and a bunch of plane rides.

And the weather was fairly hot in many places, but also cooled down after we arrived in each place (purely coincidence). I managed to get a good 'red neck' tan. Anywhere not covered by my T-shirt tanned (arms from about an inch above elbow, hands, face and neck). And I have an interesting dark tan pattern on my feet that were covered only in sandals the whole time.

It was a nice setup for when I leave for Anchorage in two weeks.

I showed off my WIP (only 6 fields to finish!) to a few people and they all liked it and can't wait to see in out in the market. I will try to get this done before I fly off. It has been in the works for way too long.

Cheers,

Good luck to you I guess Alaska is the closest you can get to a Norwegian climate in USA. Snow and cold, but that's outside! haha
