I need a way to power a car rear view LCD monitor so I can sit it on my desk and use it for viewing chat windows (streaming video (twitch)).

Does anyone know of any devices I can buy that I can link up +/- wires and set a voltage? The cheapest possible way and if possible, the device should be powered from the mains.

A search yielded this on eBay. You could probably pick up a small power jack socket for 50 cents from a website like here (eh, $1.25 there), and solder some wires to its pins to break out the power. Not sure if that would provide the voltage you need, and it does look pretty cheap. Worth a look, though.

You need a power inverter. It'll be just like hooking the monitor to your car battery.

I think he's trying to take something that normally goes in a car, and use it away from the car.

Yeah, I'm trying to use a cheap LCD car monitor for use alongside my PC, as a source for viewing a chat window. I just don't want to spend £50 on a proper monitor and I also have no real room left on my desk, so a small car LCD monitor would be perfect.

I just don't have any tools, such as a soldering iron and I'm trying to keep this cheap :\

Yes, a simple ac adapter will take care of it. Get one with the proper voltage, and amperage.

You should be pretty safe with anything around 12-14v and 15amps which is what a car would put out to a stereo. There's no way a simple lcd would need more than 15amps and in actuality you probably only need around 5 amps. Not enough amperage though and you could blow fuses or melt wires, start fires, etc.

I run a car amp for my subwoofer with a standard computer power supply.

Yes that would be perfect, no splicing wires required. You should find out the amperage requited but I'm pretty sure you can just set it to the max, you cannot go below the required amperage though. Someone else should verify this though, I'm a novice to electronics

Btw, a car outputs about 14v, in 99 percent of cases this is not an issue, 12v will usually still work.

Yes, setting to max amperage would work just fine.

Check the video input required too because that display won't hook directly up to your PC. As soon as you include HDMI, DVI or VGA in the search terms the price of displays goes up.

You might find it cheaper to use an older model android tablet instead as long as it can handle your video requirements.

As well as wanting an Composite analog input, it's 320x240 resolution which is like a playing card sized area of a normal monitor.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

@Seditious

Thanks

@IanM

I found this, but I'm having to wait till the end of the month to order all the parts to try it out.

@the_winch

I know, I just need it for a chat window, I'm hoping I can increase the font size enough to make it worth while. I'm sure I can get it readable.
