This is an unofficial competition(hence no prizes). You have to make an AI for a simple sphere to play tag with the other competitors. Your code will not be used anywhere but in this competition. Here are the rules or information:
never mind the rules cuz we're doing something else.
It would be nice if you did it in DBC because my alien ware demo ran out(not getting pro till christmas, can't wait!)

Im not exactly sure if this will work at all so if you have a better competition idea then tell me.

If you have any questions ask me here or email me ([email protected])

Put your code in the source box, not in snippets.

I haven't been programming for very long so it would be nice if you could tell me what a reasonable time to stop accepting entries would be.

I will send everyone the completed code so that they can run it themselves.

I may or may not be competing.(probly not)

Lol, Foonman305, If you wanted some AI script, you could have just asked...

Just Kidding.

But seriously, someone already wrote an AI snippet where little spaceships chase and shoot each other in 3D, It's really quite good.

It's somewhere in the 20Liner area i think, possibly the COde Snippets area...

Im not looking for AI script to help me, i just wanted to have a place for people to show off AI scripts. Once again tho, im not really sure that this competition could work, but it might be fun.

By the Way, that 20 liner is in DBP and that won't run on my comp(no idea why, have DX 9)

Yeah, I't could be fun to see what people come up with, but don't be surprised if someone just pulls it from another game that they/someone else has already made.

For that AI demo, you can get the exe from his website.

He also has a screen saver version which is really good, yet lacks in a few areas.

Hope I Helped...

okay now any AI. Post if you are going to do it.
Mine will be the worst cuz i suck at AI
I tried making my own tag AI after posting the competition but failed miserably(best i can manage is point object, move object)

About the 20 liner, any thing from DBP wont work, even exes or screen savers.(tried downloading both)

I think i will try.
you need to tell everyone what they need, ending date, starting date, etc...

if you want me to help you out with this...im here. [email protected]

i would say, give em about a month or two. i donno how long it takes to make AI, i have yet to do it. but i could make it.

Simple AI is relatively easy to make and impliment, it's just getting the setting, and having objects for it to interact with that is time consuming...

About the 20Liner, NO exe's compiled in DBPro will work? Strange...

I will enter the comp

Once i've finished my AlienWare Game, I'll give some simple AI a go

I fixed the DBP prob , just a simple install of a driver was needed!

Lets say that ill accept entries from now on until the end of February(to give time to people still doing alien ware comp)

I was thinking that people would just put it in the source thing on the forum. Otherwise they would have to mail it to everyone who is participating.

If you do want to do it the second way or if you need to mail me, my address is: [email protected]

okay, that sounds good. It does mean that they need to know how make a download on a site, which I have no idea how to do. I have never really looked into making websites. I don't really see why they can't post it here though. Oh well.

You can post source here but the other files would need to be downloaded anyway. All you need to do to make a download is zip everything into one file and then type <a href="http://yourwebsitehere/yourfilehere.zip">Download now</a> in your web page editor.

Am I the only one here who's really confused?

Just one thing to say. I can't do AI for the life of me (I'm a beginner) and was therefor interested in a competition whereI could see a lot. BUT I DON'T SEE ANY CODE, WHERE IS IT? You'll probably give me a really obvious answer and I'll feel stupid, but what the heck.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it!

What i reckon should happen, is we use this thread to chat about it in...

and make another thread to post actual code etc ( and have all the rules up top )

You know what? I'm gonna make that thread right now...

check for capital letters, it can be picky about those. although i can't find the address just by copying and pasting into the browser, check the spelling and try uploading it again. the code looks right to me.

on another more related note, i'm just starting ai for my alien compo entry, i'm thinking its gonna be pretty hard, but i guess if i finish it i might be able to skim it down and enter it into this compo.
#edit, also just in case the code entry thread slips off the board heres a link:

Here's an idea: Everybody send there entries to me (or someone else, this is just an example!) via e-mail and I'll upload it all to the same webserver so it'll be easy for others to download. I can get a free server that supports remote linking and 100mb. Just a thought...

oh i see what you mean.

i have an idea tho. you CANT post a 'question' asking someone to make an 'example' for you because you dont know how, and then use it in your entry. but they CAN ask a question about code they DO have already, or if they're not exactly sure how to go about doing something someone can tell them how. but their code should be 99.9% orriginal and that small .1% is something a few people fixed. you get what i mean? that way we dont have 100 people asking how to make their AI and end up having every entry done by 1 or 2 people

FUZZY AI? thats quite difficult to program I've looked into that before..

If anyone has a demonstration of FUZZY (self learning AI) I will vote for that as the best AI.. and they'd be in my book as one of the best programmers on here.

Oh yeah and of course I'd want to see the code for it..lol

What exactly is the criteria for judging the AI? Versatility or all out intelligence? Something to guide us would be nice, because AI can come in different forms, from solving a rubix cube to RTS.

At the moment I'm just going by the first criteria of orbs playing tag.. a simple evasion AI would do but to make something special would be nice..

I suppose orb tag on a 2 dimensional plane or in 3d would be an option.

I was thinking that maybe one of the moderators of this forum could sticky the Unofficial AI Competition - Code Entry post please?

Just so that noone forgets about it, and the people that were off doing their AlienWare entry's have a chance to enter something now that the AlinWare comp is over.

The url is Here.

Thanks Guys/Girls.

Progress Check

Just curious as to what stages people are up in their entries for the AI Comp.
I personaly haven't gotten too far atm, but that is mainly due to the DB Tutor that I am setting up, as it is taking up alot of my time.

If alot of people aren't too close to getting much done, I can extend the entry date ( not by too much, and it'll only happen once ) if everyone agree's.

Jess.

PS could a kind Mod out there anywhere PLEASE sticky the code entry part? Or isn't it worth sticky'ing? Your ( you Mod's ) thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I'd say I was about 1/3 of the way complete as I spent a lot of time on it yesterday getting the 'basics' set up..

I think maybe a week possibly two I could have a dodgy alpha version.

BTW I'm gonna try and release two versions..

1.Basic code 'for everyone to view'

2.Enhanced code 'more user friendly and graphically pleasing'

this'll be my first project I do on my own so please don't laugh too much..lol

my first picture posting...yay.. and my first totally personal project to get off the starting blocks..

obviously suffering some technical difficulties.. but I'd still say about 1/3 done. (technical difficulties posted elsewhere)

This is my Enhanced Versionpicture.. the standard will be reverse engineered to give just the basics.

I would post some screeny's, but, atm, I don't have anything to show ( my code isn't working properly ).

Keep the posts coming guys/gals...
