Hello!

A quick question about fonts. I read that "Bitmapped fonts are considered to be computerized representations of a typeface (and are not protected by copyright law)" on this website:

http://blog.crowdspring.com/2011/03/font-law-licensing/

Is it true? Does it mean that we can use any font as a font image to make an app, and sell it without owing any fee to the font creator?

Edit: Okay, I got my answer and it is no, you can't freely use any font to make a bitmap font: a bitmap font is considered as a copy of the original font software.

Alternative question: the font I want to use has an "editable embedded" license. Can I use it as a bitmap font for free?

3355 Commercial-use free fonts.

Quote: "6. Embedding
The given typeface may be embedded into an application such as a web- or mobile app, independant of the number of the application users, as long as the application does not distribute the given typeface, such as offering it as a download."

You can find plenty of free-for-commercial-use fonts out there.

http://www.1001freefonts.com/
http://openfontlibrary.org/
http://www.dafont.com/
http://www.fontsquirrel.com/
http://www.fontspace.com/
http://www.1001fonts.com/

There are heaps more

Make sure you check the license for the fonts you want to download, not all fonts are free, but you'll always find alternatives to that-amazing-font-you-just-have-to-use.
