I would like to petition the TGC team for a "Newcomers" corner. The DBpro forum has one and it gives new users a place where they can find information and make posts without worrying if they are asking a dumb question.

Also existing users like myself will be happy to go there to answer questions and help get people started.

The main forum has seen new users getting flamed and existing users getting frustrated and I think it would benefit both kinds of users to have a separate forum for new users.

If you are a new user this is NOT an attempt to push you to one side, I spent a long time browsing the newcomers corner as a new user and as an experienced user trying to help others.

If you think this is a good idea (or a dumb one) please post below. I'll point Rick at this thread if it seems popular.

Agreed.

You know what level of question to expect, and thus start with the right attitude and expectations.

I think its difficult to know when a query should be raised in a newcomers area or whether it should be raised in the main area.
If an accomplished programmer needs to ask a question about programming, then should he be classed as a newcomer since his knowledge doesn't cover what he wants to know, hence he is a newcomer to that topic.
Personally I would like to keep all threads together but what would be essential is that the new thread titles, search options and criteria are improved.
Making a new thread should depend on ticking/selecting from "subject" areas and subsequently searches should be made likewise. This would avoid the basic problem of needing to know how somebody made an initial thread on a topic and somebody else trying to find that thread by guessing the thread title.

Clearly though, if improving the "creating new" and "searching for"
cannot be better linked, then I guess a newcomers corner may be the best alternative that we may have to accept.

Just as a 2nd thought, maybe improving the search scope to include selected corners may also help. Having just 2 options, "Entire forum" and "Just this board" should be expanded a little.

Although I think a "newcomers" sticky might be good, it would need some firm guidelines. One of these would be: make every effort, by reading the help files and looking at the many examples given, to solve your problem. Plus, don't say it's a bug until you are certain that it's not you.

I don't think anybody's being flamed for anything apart from starting loads of threads and constantly asking for advice which is then ignored.

Perhaps some more AppGameKit stickies like Graphics, Sound, 3D, Shaders, Language etc would help. At the moment it's totally random and repetitive.

Agree 100%! I've been following a certain thread that this topic has stemmed from and I'm a little embarrassed how the community acted. I've worked freelance for many years and when working with people who don't speak English, you can't take their sentence meaning literally and it requires patients. Or else you'll get frustrated fast for the wrong reasons.

The newcomers board was always a nice little safe haven for people learning DBP or programming for the first time. There are many people willing to work with them and help them learn.

Quote: "If an accomplished programmer needs to ask a question about programming, then should he be classed as a newcomer since his knowledge doesn't cover what he wants to know, hence he is a newcomer to that topic."

I've been programming for almost 20 years and published 4 apps last year and I still consider myself a newb. I don't think that's really an issue. If you're new to the language or programming and you need help just understanding how to put together a program or using a command, a newcomer forum would be the perfect spot.

Honestly, sometimes having someone with experience using a certain command or language can explain usage more clearly than a help file. The help files are good at explaining the literal use for a command, but sometimes you want to know more than just where to stick a command in your code. Using the physics in AppGameKit is such a topic, which a user was constantly bashed for using. My experience has been countless hours of trial and error because no where in the help files does it explain how you should program a physics game. My last app was a platform game that uses the physics engine! I got there through trial/error and looking at examples from experienced coders.

So Mr. baxslash, does that mean you'll come out of retirement? You said yourself you'd be more than happy to help out in the newcomer forum. Why not mod it? You know you want your shiny badge back.

Good points there Moondog, and no I'm not really keen on being a mod again. I tip my hat to you all but I just don't have the time or the stomach for it any more. I'd rather help in an unofficial capacity.

I agree as well, and so the new board has been created. Hopefully this will help keep things tidy on the main boards.

ditto
Programmers never stop learning.
If you take a small break, then you will be playing catchup with technology, big time.
Technology has been evolving faster than I can keep up with it for decades.
I am years behind the guys starting out because their minds are not cluttered with old ways of doing things.

No thanks, a) I don't have time for any 'duties' and b) I have too many badges already. Not to put the badges down but I started to feel too ostentatious with all the badges I had. That's why I dumped them all while I still could before quitting as a mod.
