Hello all,
i want to update you to the news Apple is sending to all developers.
From February 2015 all new apps and new upgrades must be 64bit.
So i'm very happy i suggested this thing to Paul some months ago.

I think we are ok.
Right?

So is TGC taking any action on this?

AGK 2 on iOS is 64bit compatible already so there should be no problems there. AppGameKit 1 isn't 64bit compatible without rewriting the interpreter so you will have to upgrade to version 2 to continue developing for iOS.

Presumably iPads are going to have more than 4 gigs of RAM in future. How utterly pointless.

Quite. So what's the point of enforcing 64-bit?

No point, just Apple being Apple. :/
I've used the AGK2 setup for updating a couple of our apps and they are OK as 64bit.

There's an urban myth that 64-bit is faster than 32-bit. With less than 4Gb it may actually be slower, and, of course, using 64-it pointers can massively increase the RAM used.

Good that the latest Appleism is already done

It might be an idea to make Paul's point about AppGameKit 1 clearer on the sales stuff - it's still being sold but as of February it can't be used for new iOS apps (and from June for anything)

I think this should be mentioned in the next newsletter.

Apple are big time ballbusters!
They must come up with some new rules every few months to stir things up!

You can get away with that when you have a closed platform and people just love your product.

Perversely, it sort of makes coding for their stuff easier. You know the resolutions that will be encountered (as opposed to the extreme range of device resolutions in Android). And, you can count on only having a small range of versions to support.

Yet, it does rankle when an enforced update on their part breaks something that worked great before.

Cheers,

Hi guys...long time no speak!

I have a feeling it is more because of Apple's 5k. Will teickle down to ipads etc. Therefore images are much larger and any form of image processing will require 64bits to address lots of images in RAM.

Just a thought!

It'll also require > 4Gb of RAM, which I don't think is imminent!
