i suggest MilkShape 3D, Bryce 3D, if want to creat realistic looking characters use Poser. theres always LightWave,Maya and 3DMax. but theyr a lil hard to creat objects. but the results are amazing. u know i could write along list about great programs for creating objects, and thats the confusing part. u dont know which program to start with. and all of them can do .X files. but what i mentioned above i always use them.
hope i helped.

Dont get Maya/Lightwave/3DS Max. They can be overkill, they are VERY expensive and they just arent for newcomers to 3D. I suggest something simple like Milkshape 3D (www.milkshape3d.com) which is just $20, and something like MatEDIT (Free! www.matedit.com) for landscapes. Texturing can be done in Paint Shop Pro which is $80 (www.jasc.com)
