I recently purchased the book and found that if you are a complete beginner that this is the book for you. I personally know all the basics, so i mostly purchased this book for the more advanced commands such as the 2d and 3d commands. Here are my personal pros and cons about the book.

Pros

- Excellent book to reinforce and teach all the basics of dark basic

- Well Organized from chapter to chapter

- Covers everything from the basics such as variables, arrays, loops, conditional statments e.t.c all the way to 2d commands, sprite manipulation, 3d commands, matrices, multiplayer, and basically all the important things that you may use in the future while making games.

- Also, after every chapter there is a chapter quiz and sometimes a chapter project. This will help you reinforce what you learned in the chapter and help you along your path of game development .

Cons

- You don't jump into actual programming with dark basic until about the 100th page

- I would like to have seen alot more of 3d and multiplayer abilities covered

-Price is kind of steep if you buy it from the dark basic site. I recommend buying it from amazon.com its much cheaper.

Well there you have it i hope this helped. Overall if you are new to dark basic programming or any programming in general, this is the book for you. If you are pretty well rounded and know all the basics and some or most 2d features, then this probably isnt the book for you.

See other thread somewhere I believe its called ' where did you guys learn about DB' or something along those lines.

I recently purchased this book (from amazon as it was cheaper) and was happy with it all the way up to the section about 3D programming

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT 3D PROGRAMMING IN DARK BASIC CLASSIC

especially if you are a beginner which the book is aimed at. If you have no previous knowledge of programming you will find it hard to change the code from PRO to CLASSIC for the 3D section.

The rest of the book previous to this is very handy and is of a lot of use even for me with some previous programming knowhow.

Several of the chapters have demonstrations on the CD included which are a GODSEND when trying to figure out exactly what code does what.
Although the later chapters will have working finished .exe's it will not have the code for DB CLASSIC. as the book says its not intended for classic but for pro.

My final verdict:

If you have PRO and are new or nead to brush up on a few things the examples are great and easy to follow.

If you have CLASSIC and only want to do 2D programming then its still a good buy if you can afford it.
BUT if you want to do 3D programming in classic and thats one of your aims then I guess I would have to say find a different book. I'm sure there are books aimed at just classic out ther esomewhere.

so in other words PRO users buy it <even for refference>. CLASSIC 3D users steer clear as its not much use.

Ok so its not a mouse.

pleased to help.

These forums etc are the probably the best place to look for help anyway. The books once you've read through them and got the basics they are usually used for reference.
