just wondering. i havnt check since i was in 8th grade (im in 11th now), and then i would type about 70-80wpm when im making things up as i go, and 90-100wpm when i read and type at the same time. i dont know what im at now, i think i might have droped down from due to lack of typing, but now i think it has gone up agian now that i have starting programming again.

I think that fastest I've ever typed was around 110 words per minute...

But that was a sentence that was something like: "The cat went over to the dog and said hi."

I usually hit around 100 though.

Bearing in mind that it is 2:30AM in the morning and I have just come back from a party - about 70WPM

That isn't really very useful though - I cannot "think" at anywhere near that speed. Sure I can do 70-80 when purely copying, but I don't do that very often.

Often it will take me an hour to produce say 50 lines of code for example (if you averaged out the hours over the line count).

I reach 120 wpm at 100% accuracy the last time I checked - when I was at college. These days I think I probably type at about 50 wpm with a lowly 5% accuracy.

The accuracy problem is more a case of not knowing how to spell then it is anything to do with hitting the wrong keys.

My mother is the fastest typist I have ever seen, clocking in at over 200 wpm at full flight, her employers pay her rather a lot of money because of it, it's actually quite funny to watch her type when she's one key to the left or right, she'll do a whole paragraph before she realises.

When I started highschool, I was around 60wpm. Then I took a touch typing class and did about 24wpm. Years later, I'd guess about 80 or something, but I'll rarely type a mistake. Is there any free typing programs out there we can all try out?

45 WPM. i never learned how to type mind you. but it's kind of sad, considering i've been typing at 45WPM for about 3 years now though my accuracy is great.

sometimes i'll be able to type faster and i'm not sure why. i typed a 4 page paper in about 5 minutes once :o

How can you all type so fast? I can only do around 40-60 wpm, and I still have to look at the keyboard and push backspace a lot. Oh well, I wasn't born during the days of DOS.

165wpm ... which is just about adverage speech speed, but against the people i'm around daily; but you put that against the spelling mistakes then no doubt it'd drop to around 120ish for perfect typing.

as i said still consider my typing speed slow, really should learn touch typing someday, right now i just know the keyboard so much that i can type sorta like touch typing but my hands are always all across the board rather than in the set positions.
probably why they tend to get tired a lil quicker than most of my friends too (when your typing for like 8-9hrs a day you begin to really feel you hands get tired, and wriste guards only help so much)

70 wpm typing "the cat went over to the dog and said hi" again and again. I'm sure I'd be faster, just typing the same thing over and over again, you start to slow down and make loads of mistakes, kind of like when you say stuff repeatedly.

EDIT

Ok I just typed random stuff for a minute and it came out at 63wpm. Quite weird what you type when you're thinking up stuff on the spot.

Do you bite your thumb at me sir?

chalk it upto whatever you want Divide, but i'm S-L-O-W compared to almost everyone i know.

and i've gotta consentrate more if i want to type fast, i can only type around 110wpm when i'm not looking at the screen like having a conversation or something.
most coders i know can do around 200wpm atleast... you might remember me complaining about the buffer speeds in the current IDE's people have made.

This is why i complained they're too slow for me. And i'm sure most of the professional coders here suffer from similar problems.
I know that Microsoft Word is used one hell of alot because of this, as it is the ONLY word processor with a buffer capable of handling timematic rates of upto 400.

Depends. Haven't checked in years. But do you mean proper typing (ie. touch) or the kind that programmers tend to do (look at keyboard and correct later)? When I was about 18 I was pretty good with the "programmers" type of typing, then did a touch typing course at College (to get out of other things mainly). Is a lot better. Find I'm more accurate, but not quite as fast. Interestingly my typing speed and spelling has gone right down the swanney after a decade of doing programming for a living. Think it's mainly cos you mainly sit around thinking about the actual design of things rather than typing.

Oh, and yonks ago we had Mavis Deacon software at college. We programmed our own "version" (GW-Basic I believe) that basically read a text file and printed out the next letter as you typed. The lecturer almost fell over with the X thousand words per minute I appeared to be typing like a nutter.

Cheers

200wpm???? Whilst coding??????? Grief, didn't even see that before. Urm. Ok. Must have amazing amount of coding "cache" in their brains stored away. We are talking over 3 words a second here. Even on useful IDE's that default your commands, that's going some. Hell, most secretary jobs are advertised at 120wpm or less! And that's for typing up something written down, or dictation. Either way it's not coming out of your head. ie. that's just copying, not thinking something like "Hmmmm... now I should use a gosub..." *and* still slamming in at least 3 words in that second of thought. Ok.... Do they have a lot of REM statements with lots of ramblings while they ponder the next line of code?

Understand now why your spelling is always crap.

Cheers

Does that mean that you can type the word 'onomatopoeia' nearly 200 times in a minute? How do you define a 'word'? Is a word like anything separated by a space or 3-4 characters?

Yeah, I thought something like that. But more like, say, you have a line like:-

IF D=E THEN LET A=B+C

You could argue that there are 5 words in that. Or even 11 if you separate out = and +. And once I've thought of the line for a few secs actually typing some simpleton effort like that would put me in seriously high wpm. But if you have decent sized variable names (as you should to explain what you are doing) then cannot see it myself.

Cheers
