I've wandering through DB now for a some weeks (more like wading at some points) and I've noticed something...

In all the games demo's etc I've looked at so far why are they all including skybox's not sky spheres.

I understand there might be memory issues or more importantly refresh rate issues but wouldn't spheres be better than box's no ghastly clipping lines or that bizzare effect when you go anywhere near a corner?

spheres have a few more poly's, if you set the texture blending stuff right the corners of the box dissapear completely, and if you have a skybox which is always centered round the player, you'll never reach the corners. box's are easy to uv map a good texture onto i think aswell, also if your gonna use darkmatter sky spheres they don't have tops/bottoms so that looks awful, whereas the skybox work gooood

Actually I was gonna build my own.

But at least I know now.

I was thinking of building a sky sphere with a sun on one side and a moon on the other and to have it rotate for the time of day.

What do you think? anyone tried this before?

I use skyboxes...

1. easy to create using terragen or similar product.
2. easy to create on the fly
3. always centred on camera, you never reach the edge

4. if use are using fog, you need to be careful about distance that the fog starts at

The sun and moon thing...you would have to rotate the skybox with the camera to prevent day turning into night. Therefore, your scenery wouldn't move, so you might as well just use a static backdrop.

@ HEx gear > quite a simple idea really, I might have a go a bit later when I wake up a little and try and make a little demo

Simply texture a WHOLE sphere, one side as day one side as night with a small chunk between each side as dusk.

Then as the time advances rotate the sphere around if a whole day in your game takes 10 mins for example the sphere would rotate 180* in 10 mins.

As extra options to it you could make the sphere stop on the 180* and 360* mark while its day night and only turn it during dusk.

..and then theres the option to switch fog on at night?

<edited>

just realised summat if I want to do a demo I need to learn how to use milkshape and how to scale it to DB. darn it theres always something blocking my path...mm potion of giants strength...

<editted again>

please tell me if this is a stupid idea? I think it might work but I don't know if its a functional and feasable idea in DB classic

its feasible and was done on the rgt forums by some new guy who was struggling and gave up just when he got it working, we never heard from him again, but I added a point scource for the sun and turned down the ambient at night and it worked a treat (the revolving of the skysphere was done in whatever editor he made the model in as an animation)add a transparent cloud layer and it would be even better (I have a short attentio......

Problem: You're gonna have a stage where you have day to your right, and night to your left, with dusk in the middle.

A better idea might be to have 2 skyspheres, the same size, and fade one out as the other fades in. Or have one slightly larger than other, always opaque, and just fade the smaller one in and out.

Depends on how big the sphere is...

If the sphere is alittle larger than normal it should work .. would take some fidling.. but still I think possible.

Some of the space box's I've seen have been HUGE so a LOW-poly sky sphere of a massive size shouldn't too much of a problem I wouldn't think..

Dang.. I still need to go learn how to use milkshape..

although saying that when daylight ends its quite normal to see light blue on one side of th sky and dark blue on the other.

it did look ok, the guy made a realy good texture for it too, the "strip" of dusk was well faded and fairl wide so it looked ok, quite natural, so it is possible.

Because with a skysphere, it will be MUCH harder to get the texture to align seamlessly. A skybox, 4 squares and that's it. A skysphere, well it'd be a huge challenge to align a tiled sky texture to it without having it break.

For a Skybox, you don't need Milkshape, see source box...
