Well I've been working on this new game engine ever since I finished my Alienware project, and I'm finally ready to get a little feedback. so here it is!

the graphics and models/textures are mostly placeholders. the engine is extremely flexible, everything is handled with external setup files.

screenshots

http://walaber.dbspot.com/sbf/engine01.jpg
http://walaber.dbspot.com/sbf/engine02.jpg

DOWNLOAD ON MY WEBSITE:
http://walaber.dbspot.com/default.htm

Anyways, please give it a try.

arrow keys to move

space to jump

"f" for follow-cam
"w" for wide-cam

"q" to quit and generate "results.txt" file.

please let me know what you think of the collision, and also post the contents of "results.txt", which gives fps information. also your basic system specs/OS would really be helpful!

I know everyone's busy playing Alienware entries, but please give this a quickk try!

p.s. you can now download all of my other games from the website above (thanks Jimmy!! )

That is lookin nice! That collision is smooth. I did notice that if you move the window, or change it's properties in any way then the whole system goes awry.

Anyways, good job!
I hope you plan to develop this even further.

thanks again everyone for the comments! I will be developing this engine into a complete game, hopefully I can find some ways to make it even faster, because once I add more features the framerate will suffer... but I have some more optimization ideas, so we'll see...

please keep the responses coming!

One thing to fix. Its the animation. The way they morph into eachother. The animations look good.

I don't suppose anyone else would like to give this a try? I'd really appreciate all the input I can get on the engine...

I'm improving it every day, hopefully I will have a bigger and better demo available relatively soon, once I finish my level editor, and make some more models/textures.

again, thanks to those who've provided comments so far!

- As mentioned before, ability to go backwards
- I jumped out of the fence and I just kept falling forever.
Might wanna add a little restart, somewhere.(Check point)

Overall nice job Walabar, I'll be watching(and maybe testing ) this project.

nice frame rate!

my personal system is an Athlon XP 2400+ w/ 1GB ram, and a Ti4200 Nvidia with 128MB... I get around 350-400fps...

yeah, the gravity and jumping are not completely fine-tuned yet. The cool thing about the engine is that everything about the level/props/characters can be adjusted via external files, making the engine very upgradeable/expandable.

Once the engine is all set, and all of the features are in place, I'll start making it into a real game!

since this post I have updated the engine with some optimizations/etc that should make it a bit faster (as well as fixing the "falling off the level" business.)

UPDATE - Got the editor almost complete... it's very functional now, just a few more small additions to make it complete. Then a few other prop/character file editors, and the game's dev tools will be mostly complete! then I need to get modelling, and writing the rest of the actual game engine!!

quick screenshot:

any comments welcome!

P.S. Thanks to RobK for the Blue GUI!! It made the editor's development MUCH MUCH faster!!!

did some more work on the dev tools... they're turning out so nice that I think I'll include them with the final release of the game, so people can make their own characters/levels/props

this thread has like 300 views, but only *6* people have given me feedback... PLEASE give it a try!! it's 3D! you can jump! and run! and there's collision!! that I made myself!!!

Added the ability to throw snowballs to the engine. it's all working nice with collision, etc!

was actually easier than I thought

here's a couple screenshots:

http://walaber.dbspot.com/sbf/engine04.jpg
http://walaber.dbspot.com/sbf/engine05.jpg

*NOTE* the demo version available on my website doesn't have these updates in it... it's about a week old, still using the old engine, and the old models. The current build on my computer is the ones the later screenshots are from.

with a little more I will release a new DEMO with the recent features enabled!

comments please !!

thanks for the comments everyone... I think I'm gonna hold off on a new DEMO for a bit...

I need to sit down and do some modelling/texturing/animating... once I have a level that's closer to complete, I'll release the next demo (complete with hucking snowballs around, etc)

of course I'll continue to post WIP screenshots etc.

hehe... that has to do with the timer() based sync system... if the program is interrupted for a long time, you can fall through the ground... currently only a problem b/c the program dumps you right into the engine, and sometimes windows wants to think a bit when you first start it up. I've noticed if I leave it running in the background of my PC while doing other tasks, when I switch back I have often fallen through the floor

I'll try to fix it up in the next demo release

you may have seen my other post about lightmaps... with the new version of Gile[s] (1.17) lightmapper, you can export .dbo files. here's a shot of the level running in DBPro. this is a SINGLE object file, no 2-object-1-is-ghosted type deal. I think the level is looking better and better! hope to have a new demo relatively soon...

the editor is useless without the engine, so I'll release it with the final game release... the whole thing works together as a system. the editors are fairly specific to the game engine, I don't think they could be used for any other general puropses...

I hope to have a new demo out relatively soon!

did some work on the engine. I added a simple weather system. Now snow falls during the game! you can control the amount of snow, etc!

it looks much better in motion:

in other news I got the weekend off from work, so after I finish re-animating the character model, I will put together a new demo, with the new level, new textured character, ability to throw snowballs, and of course falling snow!! Hopefully it'll be ready by sunday!
