Hi. I have decided to post this thread to see which of a few 3D modeling programs is the best. Here's the four I'm starting out with:

1) Truespace
2) Wings
3) Milkshape
4) 3D canvas Pro
5) Gamespace

Feel free to add more!

Firstly, thats five Secondly, no one can decide which is best, except for you. I use Milkshape 3D. You are the only one that can decide which is best.

Try Anim8or. I use it and it is really easy (http://www.anim8or.com). Otherwise I like Wings3D (http://www.wings3d.com/).

If you're talking about spending money, then you are wrong...

@Doucan, Try JTEdit... I really like it ( it's still Beta, but is faily stable and has plentitudes of commands )

Jess.

The best (on your list) are probably Milkshape3d or True/Game Space. They're both relatively inexpensive and for the most part you get plenty of features for your money. What I do is use gmax (www.discreet.com) for very high detail editing, export it to .md3 with Tempest or something, convert it to .3ds with 3d Exploration, then fine tune normals and create animation in some other program that exports to .x or .3ds.

You are comparing chalk and cheese.

You can't put Milkshape and Gamespace, for example, in the same category because of the price.

You can't put TruSpace and Wings in the same category, because one is a fully-featured modeller, renderer and animator; the other is a low-poly modeller

Quote: "LightWave. Any other package is crap."

On value per penny spent, I think you'll find that statement highly inaccurate...and not a very constructive criticism either.

That was a beautiful thing Chiwawa. Got any plans to make Chiwawa's One Stop Solution to Modelling for DB or something like that?

If you are using Anim8or, then it's wise to get Terranim8or too.
With that you can add terrain made by Terranim8or to Anim8or and make something complex.
Both free and don't need any scripts writing.

I am not sure if you can export to x because I have the trial version but the best modeling program you can ever try that is so dang awsome is zbrush, zbrush.com. You can make a professional model in a matter of minutes and you can paint directly on the model. It is a little confusing at first but if you learn the tutorials you will be making some awesome creations in no time!!!

Yeah, I've tryed ZBrush 1.23... It was awesome, except it wouldn't be very good for modeling for games as ussually in ZBrush the focus is on quality, high-polly models rather than simple models that are for games...

The only problem with ZBrush is that, like all the others, it costs big time.

It's your call, you can dig out the cash from behind the couch and see if you can get enough to buy one of the top-quality, commercial madelers, or just pull out $20 and get something like MilkShape, or you could even go for one of the free modelers.

Jess.
