Well now, I thought I would put this up as my 11 year old daughter (who is learning Darkbasic) had a go at a demo after seeing one on another website.

I’m very proud of her, as she has only been using Darkbasic for just over a week now, and while the demo is not polished like some, I think it shows just how powerful Darkbasic is.

After all she is 11 and she spent 4 hours doing this, so it just goes to show what can be done quickly.

Here is the link:

http://hstrial-ssomeone.homestead.com/files/DBDEMO.zip

I am sure she would like to read any input you have, but be nice.

PS: She used my handle "Reaperman" as she does not have one and she is not a member of this site. She has just asked me to ask if someone can tell me what age limit (if any) there is for this site...Can she make herself a member?

lol, thats never done by a 11 year old child. this demo shows some very advanced maths and a lot of programming knowledge so i cant belive thats done by your doughter in 4 hours without any help. sorry for my mistrust.

and about that age limit, i guess there isn't a limit.

Yes it was. I am not in the habit of not telling the truth when it comes to my kids. She designed what she wanted on paper first then spent an hour looking at the bits of code she could use. She then sat down and put it all together with her own bits of code. And the demo is the result.

Of cause I did Hamish... I showed her and helped her when she needed to know "how do I make it do this?" type of question.

But I put the demo here to show not just what she has done but also just how powerful Darkbasic is ...Even for a child.

Before I begin let me just laugh at this :

I know what you meant, but still... *giggle*

Your daughter is welcome here despite her age, infact some of the older boys could use some help from somebody who knows what they are doing!

I was very impressed watching this little snippet, and for completely programming related reasons cannot wait until your daughter is older to see what she does.

Good stuff.

Cool, I suppose it's obvious that you helped :p, shouldn't have asked that question, but if she understands it all then that's very impressive.

holy crap! I couldn't produce anything neaarr that. (horrible at math). But... wow, extreme wowness. Even as I saw the beginning intro thingy, all I could say to myself was "wow"

You have an extremely talented daughter, and I wish I could have gotten such an early start on programming in a language such as DB.

It is good. How did you do the music?

The music was done on keyboard and saved out to a mod format.

Your right I did compile the graphics for her.

Thanks for the feed back.....She thinks it is great.

Sure... The first one was nothing much...you see worse on TV in England than that film. Tho I do say "No" to something's, but this film was fine. Besides I used to do Special Effects work and she is used to the concept and visuals.

matrix isn't R first, second, third were all M15+ (or was one MA15+)
This is in Melbourne, Australia anyway. Plus if it was R they don't permit anyone under the age of 18 in the cinema at all even with a guardian.

ah, movie ratings. in america, the matrix was rated R, which stands for restricted, which here means no one under 17 permitted without a parent or guardian. i guess our version of the australian R is NC-17, no children under 17.

oh, wow. insignificantpunks.cjb.net. we like orange treble clef notes, just for future reference.

Film ratings in America & other colonies may or may not apply to Repearman, if he chooses to live in American AND chooses to only go to the cinema to see films.

Anyway this is veering a bit off topic. Let me to say Reaperman that his retirement plan seems to be sorted. His daughter is obviously v. bright so she will grow up, earn millions, and he'll be able to spend his retirement flitting between all the different mansions that the family owns.

I particularly liked the moving snake things btw.

your daughter has done a good job.

(i am 13)
she can obvioussly get help from you by asking questions but i have no-one in my family who knows anything about computers.

can you tell me, do the given tutorials give you enough to produce
a good game that is worthy of other games?(as i have not purchased it yet and i am deeply considering it) (i am willing to put a lot of time into things so time is not a problem)

The first thing I will say is this:

The tutorials are a good lead in to the overall design and code used for a game.

However, I need to also say that you must have the perseverance and aptitude to become a programmer.

Anyone can do the... Print “Hello... type of programming, but to successfully complete a full project takes a lot of hard work, and so you need to look at it from the point of view of.. “Am I just going to use this as a hobby, or as a Job?

I have been a programmer now since the days of the ZX81. I have worked (and still do) within the gaming industry and I have been involved in many games that most of you would have played at some point, be it a retro-game or a more up-to-date one. For me..I chose “Job. But that may not be what you want.

The line is this... Tutorials can show you many things. Books can do likewise. But when it comes down to it you must be willing to work hard at it and find your own way around the language.

If you have no one in your family to help you, then you can email me and I will help if I can. But you also have all the people on this board too and some of them are very professional in what they do.. So don’t worry if you cannot pick up something from the tutorials, as you are never far from help.

On a personal note:
I found out about Darkbasic by accident and decided to test-drive it. I am pleasantly surprised at its power and it is a fun language to learn.
I would recommend Darkbasic Classic or Pro to anyone seeking to further (or start) their carrier in programming on the PC...even if its only as a hobby.

Reaperman thanks for all the support you gave in your last post.
i plan on putting in a lot of time into a project (probably about 2-3 hours a day on a weekday as i am at school and about 5 on a weekend).

I also plan on taking a job in this "field" of computers.
I am currently starting at school to work on my GCSE's.

standard I.T was not on the list of options that I was given so i had to choose I.C.T which covers:

* financeing a business
* marketing ideas
*standard microsoft office work (my school runs widows 2000)
* business logo's for a business.
*(possible basic web-page development in out own time)

so there is not much here that revolves around this area so i can not gain experiaence in these things from school.

The best way to learn programming is to mess with code that is already working properly. You would already need a DB program to do this..how about the demo version. There is lots of code around if you look for it, plus you get demos with DB.
