Our resident Nvidia fan is not going to be pleased. It appears Nvidia's market share has slipped and ATI is in the lead...barely.

Quote: "Data released Monday night by Mercury Research showed Nvidia slipping to third in the graphics market with 24.7 percent share, just behind rival ATI Technologies Inc. (ATY.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) , which rose to 24.9 percent."

http://www.reuters.com/financeQuoteCompanyNewsArticle.jhtml?storyID=4219163&ric=NVDA.OQ&infotype=news&compname=NVIDIA+CORP

This doesn't sound good for Nvidia.

Sad how cheap integrated graphics chipsets remain so popular

Raven's going to come here with a big long post, but I'll sum it up in advance: The information is inaccurate, market shares don't really matter anyways and ATI's only ahead because of the complete ignorance of the public. Once again showing he knows better than the rest of the world

Waiting on the R420 at the moment, should be out in a few months.

The way I figure it, I want to get the last AGP 8X video card on the market and the most highend as well.

So I am probably going to get the All In Wonder Radeon R420 with 256 megs of ram.

Raven just needs to stop being biased. I can understand though because I was an Nvidia fan until last year. I think ATI is more efficient with the use of their transistors and processes.

The problem with Nvidia is that they spread themselves too thin and that cost them the 3D chip market. They try to hide all of this through intense marketing, but its just marketing.

I, contrary to most of you, usually agree with the things Raven has said. It seems he'll say something that even to me sounds outrageous, he'll get slammed on the thread, he'll back it up with proof, then everyone will still slam him-- egging him on, making him write longer and longer responses. Then everyone just laughs at him and says he's a liar, etc.

I mean, who hasn't at one time in their life, stretched the truth a little?

Then again, I like playing the devil's advocate in real life. I'll usually like to disagree with the majority (I'm too political hehe).

I support ATI because they're Canadian, but I use Nvidia technology. Now that Half-Life 2 will apparently run better with the ATI chipsets, I feel a little bad.

@Mouse

You know Raven all too well.

Intel's huge market share suprised me too though. I had no idea that they had 30 something % market share with those crappy integrated graphics chips. Kindof an eye opener really.

@Horror Help

"He's almost as much of a jackass as Neophyte is"

The feeling is mutual.

@Jeku

"I, contrary to most of you, usually agree with the things Raven has said."

I'm intensely curious. What exactly is it that you agree with him about?

" It seems he'll say something that even to me sounds outrageous, he'll get slammed on the thread, he'll back it up with proof, then everyone will still slam him-- egging him on, making him write longer and longer responses. Then everyone just laughs at him and says he's a liar, etc. "

Raven NEVER backs anything he says up with proof. You've got Raven confused with someone else here. He's famous for his complete insistence on the vericity of something even after it has been disproven long ago.

Take a look at our recent argument in the karma thread. You won't see a single shread of proof forwarded on his part. Not once. I on the other hand, offered a lot of proof to the contrary. Too much aparently, as Raven has tucked tail and disappeared recently.

http://darkbasicpro.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=24511&b=2

"I mean, who hasn't at one time in their life, stretched the truth a little?"

Raven, doesn't just strech the truth. He puts it in a blender and craps in it. And it isn't just once either. He makes up a lot of wild assertions and until you've argued with him or look up on some of the claims that he makes you'll probably not believe me. Hell, before I met Raven I didn't think that it was humanly possible to be so misinformed about anything.

And its not so much that he makes stuff up. What really sends people over the edge is his absolute insistence that he is right and YOU ARE WRONG. Its the combination of arrogance and complete ignorance about the subjects he brags about knowing so well that really grates one's nerves beyond the braking point.

I'm not sure how long you've been here, but I've browsed these forums for far longer than my Joined date says and I've seen Raven post some really wild b.s. I don't know if you've seen it, (I doubt you have if you think Raven only streches the truth a little ) but I'll dig up some old argument if you want to see Raven really in action. Its a thing that has to be seen to be believed.

"Then again, I like playing the devil's advocate in real life."

Ahhh...

So that is why you are defending him. Trying to rile the forum residents up, eh?

Not wanting to start a flame war here, but what do you mean there's no proof? I took a look at the link you put in there and you both are offering up countless links. Also, he says he is a forum member on the Nvidia site, a mod even, and since I'm not, and don't plan on being, I only took into consideration the details *before* he posted that information.

It's hard for me to see that "[I] won't see a single shread of proof forwarded on [Raven's] part. Not once."

And no, I'm not defending him just to rile up the residents hehehe. I just don't see an outright, blatant, outrageous, vile lie that a lot of people say he's written. I *do* see, however, countless posts from others, and you can't deny this, who post some snide remark after Raven's post, which has nothing to do with the thread, just *because* it was Raven who posted. That's what irked me (for about 20 seconds anyway).

"I don't care. I'm too exhausted to argue a moot topic anyways "

I won't press the point further then. I think I've argued a little too much lately in fact. More than I usually do.

Though I will admit that a lot of people do take unnecessary pot shots at Raven. I don't paticualarly condone it or precipitate in them. Some of them even really annoyed me and I thought that they were uncalled for.

But I'm torn over whether to speak out against it though. Raven's arrogance grinds my nevres sometimes and I find it hard to defend him because inside it makes me cringe. To make one of my patented crappy analogies, defending Raven is kinda of like being on the team of a really annoying quater back. You know that you have this abligation to defend him, but it is just so damn tempting to step aside every now and then and let him get creamed by the other team.

From my own experience recently, the CURRENT low-end NVidias are far better value than the low end ATi cards, but the Highend ATi cards slightly out-perform high-end NVidia in most tests. Mind you, I'll still stick with NVidia for now, because I find their drivers much more reliable, and some effects look slightly nicer.

Raven's a good guy I wish people would stop knocking him just for having his own opinions

I've been on this forum in various guises for a long time and he's been v helpful to me. Just remember that not all benchmarks are realistic of standard usage... its easy to fiddle them to make different cards look better, and it starts getting very petty.

Plus, nobody's perfect, and everybody is wrong sometimes... that doesn't make some1 stupid!

Of course I'M never wrong - for the simple reason that I'm NOT stupid

@Kangaroo2 BETA2

"Mind you, I'll still stick with NVidia for now, because I find their drivers much more reliable, "

So will I. I have no intention of buying an ATI card anytime soon. I think Nvidia does more for developers than ATI does though they both put in a good effort. My loyalty toward Nvidia isn't about their graphics card performance so much as what they do for developers like me.

"Raven's a good guy I wish people would stop knocking him just for having his own opinions"

People don't knock him for his opinions. They knock him for his abnoxious attitude, and his elitism. He thinks he is so damn great when in reality he isn't at all. If you want a good example of this just check out the recent karma thread:
http://darkbasicpro.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=24511&b=2

In it he says
Quote: "I'd suggest you morons actually do a registered company search before you start."

and
Quote: "I swear you people are just so mind numblingly stupid."

and this
Quote: "It's like talking to guys brains the size of peas."

And that is all in one post. He acts like he knows it all but if you'll notice he was dead wrong about everything. Nothing he said was right and he even lied about being the administrator for forums that don't even exist! And this isn't an isolated incident. He has being doing this stuff for as long as he has been on the forums and from what I can gather that has been a long time.

Raven is so full of hot air that he just needs to be brought down a notch every now and then and reminded that he doesn't know dick. Otherwise, you'd be able to smell the amount of bs that filled these forums through your monitor!

Someone should keep a record of links to all of the great Raven threads. Then, whenever someone says "Don't be horrible to him for no reason" we'll just give them it.

I've never seen anyone call Raven anything (he calls other people stuff all the time).

People just contridict his ridiculous claims with facts and evidence.

He should stop lieing

In some ways this is good news to me because this Christmas I got GeForce FX 5600, and it is still too slow for me. I want an ATI Radeon but that might not happen in a year because I already got the new card two months ago.

No offense to Raven, but I'm going to want an ATI card real soon.

I think he's away-- I haven't seen a post from him in any of the forums for a number of days. I'll eat my hat if.... well nevermind.

I'm on a TNT2 right now and it's got all sorts of annoying graphical glitches with games. I get random black and white dots on DirectX surfaces (that inlcudes MSpaint-- does it use primitve DirectDraw?) and zebraing at long distances in games like Unreal Tournament. Generally speaking I've found far better quality from ATI. I've never uesd a Voodoo card however so I'm wondering how they were before they went kaput.

"Why does Raven's name keep appearing on Threads?"

The last time his name appeared in a thread was last December. Before that it was October. His name doesn't really appear in threads that often.

"It seems to be a Flamebait thread to me."

It isn't. I named the thread "Raven will not be pleased" for two reasons.

The first is that he is our resident Nvidia fanboy. I can't think of a single forum user that comes close to Raven's loyalty to Nvidia so I thought I'd get his attention as I wanted to hear his thoughts on the matter.

This is some rather stunning news about Nvidia and I don't think anyone, including me, saw it coming. I always imagined that Nvidia was king of the hill by a good margin and would stay that way for quite some time. Them getting abruptly knocked down a notch by ATI kinda came as a shock. Granted it is only like .02 percent that ATI is leading them by but it is a significant development and could be pointing to a trend of ATI gaining market share and Nvidia losing it.

Second, I wanted to see if Raven was still browsing the forums. I haven't seen him in the forums at all recently after the karma debacle. That's not like him at all and my curiosity was nagging at me. I wanted to know if he was still lurking, and if he was, why. I had his name in the title because, as I said before, it would get his attention and he would invariably post if he was here. Out of all of the threads that are addressed to Raven(and there are only 15 in this forum's history) only one he didn't respond to and that was because it was locked after 11 posts. So I figured that I had a pretty good probability of getting him to engage in a little dialogue if he was here.

In retrospect, I probably should have named the thread "Nvidia is in trouble" or something like that, but I only thought of that now, and "Raven will not be pleased" is what popped into my mind when I decided to post this on the forums so here we are.

But from his rather stunning silence on this matter I can probably safely conclude that he isn't browsing these forums. My curiosity has been satisfied so I'm probably just going to leave this thread be for now, unless of coarse anyone wants to get back to the original subject. Then I'll discuss that, but that's probably about it.

@Chris Knott

"Someone should keep a record of links to all of the great Raven threads. Then, whenever someone says "Don't be horrible to him for no reason" we'll just give them it."

I've toyed with that idea myself but I've never actually bother trying to. It just didn't seem worth my time.

In case your interested though, here is the first and second arguments I ever had with Raven. Both classic Raven threads. Careful though. They're a very long read.

My first argument with Raven. Ahh...the memories. We never really did agree about shaders.
http://darkbasicpro.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=8191&b=1

My second arguement, again about shaders.
http://darkbasicpro.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=10482&b=1

Enjoy.
