Because that's what it was made for.
Some programmers like to make games and DarkBasic just makes
this easier. If you want, you can make some other things in
DB, but it isn't what the language was cut out to do. It's like
saying, "Why don't people make MMORPGs in ASM? There wouldn't be
any lag with all that speed!".

Why do programmers always mix up Christmas and Halloween?
Because DEC 25 = OCT 31

I was just saying cause it seems alot like level 2 basic (free air gitar to anyone who can tell me what computer thats from ) with a bunch of new graphical commands, and there where busness app and stuff writen in that. in fact, with a few more comands DB could open itself to a whole new market.

also, I am in the process of make a non-game app. its a D&D character creatior, i nkow it been done and its worthless, but im a newb and i thought it would make it easy since most of the creative parts are alredy done. by the way, this program was origenally designed for level 2 basic

"DARK BASIC: THE ULTIMATE '3D' GAMES CREATOR"
it was made to make games....it is sold to make games...ppl buy it to make games...why would you use a 3d engine(which is what db revolves around) to make an application ...
lee (db's maker) has also made other game creation software

i guess the main answer to ur question is that ppl by it to make games so they make games if ppl wanted to make aplications then theyd get vb or somthing

im just saying, why sell to one market when they could sell to many

it just seems like poor marketing to me

also, a good 3d engine is great for many apps, mp3 players with really cool 3d sound comes to mind

If DB/DBPro were sold as Windows App Kits, there would be more sales, but the complaints would soar .... Primary reason not
to use DB/DPro for WinApps... file size....

Who would want a simple text app (D&D character gen) to take up 4MB or more when you can use VB/Delphi and make an app that fits on a floppy with room left over for the character files? Sure, it works fine if you have DB and your friends have Db so you can pass the source code.....

Next big complaint would be lack of direct windows support....
Sure, most can be gotten from third parties, but you would need to find them, download them, obtain tech docs for them, and update them appart from DB/DPro.... thats alot of direct work ...

Who says you can only make games in DB?

I've made a texture transition tool, a seamless texture art package, and a soundtracker in DB/DBPro - that's excluding the dozen or so game dev tools (level editors, model prep stuff etc). DBPro is damn cool for writing graphically intense applications because you have nice easy 2D commands that let you make your own GUI's however you like. People often assume that using something like VB is best for gui intensive stuff, and to a point I'd agree - but it's actually more sensible to use DB for a 'drawn' gui. Pasting images in the right place gives you much more control than hiding and showing picture controls in VB.

There's also the Blue plugin as well which allows windows gadgets in DBPro.

Games are instant gradification

Stupid people need instant gradification

Stupid people will buy instant gradification

I bought it for a specific application, and it's not a game.

The kind of routines I'm developing will create quite a nice library for other non-game related apps. The Blue Graphical interface and other similar add-ons also make it easier to program non-game related stuff.

Also the more features you would have to add to create an application development tool from the existing DarkBasic Program would most likely increase file sizes, Slow program execution which is a crdinal sin in game development and just create more feature creep and bloat.

It is true that Lee could create a side by side development, and focus one version of Application development but he would have to do a lot of development to get it to the point many people would be willing to switch over from other development languages. to many features that everyday developers want are not included.
Windows printing
Improved file system
Database Access for existing formats
Standard windows development enviroment
... what have I missed.

I think DB is the best at what it does. Dont dilute the languages strengths by trying to make it all things to all people. That is what Microsoft did with so many of the programs they developed. They are not the best but just are used by a more diverse group of people.

Wasting CPU Cycles since the 286 was a hot machine.

Every language has a purpose Java is used for Server apps in Enterprize aplications, VB is for windows forms, Dark Basic is for games. I am an unemployed Database programmer, there are no jobs left. Why not have fun with games ?
