i have been working on a remake and am having trouble making the rings scatter when hit. could anybody offer any help on this problem?

you could use some trig and just vary the distance each ring can go, don't ask me exactly what trig to use.. cos i don't know

Take a look at my particle engine tutorial. It'll explain how to throw your rings up into the air in various directions.
