@ killswitch
no comment on the dinosaur to chicken-egg thingy. I'm just gonna leave it alone for now.

Using an apostrophe to pluralise something and being grammatically correct is a paradox unless I'm mistaken.

KillSwitch, I won't spell it correctly until you call 'paradox's' by their proper name, paradoxes

The all-time classic paradox is the man going back in time and inadvetantly killing his own father; thus he never existed, thus he didn't kill his father, thus he did exist and did kill his father... etc. One of the many impossibilities of standard doctrine time travel (and the reason new 'rules' are good).

Wow just by making the W bigger I sound like a witch hunter.

@Everyone

I brought the name spelling thing upon myself, didn't I?

Sorry about spelling paradoxes wrong, spelling has never been my strong point.

May just be a lie

Quote: "I am dead"

May just be a lie

They aren't true paradoxes for those reasons. 'This statement is a lie' is a paradox because it keeps looping around whether it is a lie or it is truthful.

I believe a paradox is a statement that appears to be true and to be false at same time.

"I know I know nothing" - this, I believe, is an example of a paradox. But then again, because I've already said that "I know nothing" perhaps my whole post is a paradox

I'm gonna go to Google now and search "Paradox Defination"

The paradox about the man going back in time to kill his father is false- Because if you accept that the man went back in time you accept the fact there are parralel worlds spaced out 1unittime/sppacetime apart and the fact that the world he came from keeps moving(obviously) - his going back in time does not stop his original world and his arrival back in time has to be in a diffirent place. The fact that he kills his father will shape history in the world he visited ONLY and not the world he came from, because otherwise you would accept that time from the world he visited zapped foward faster than time (time going faster than time is impossible) and affected all the parralel worlds in front of it incuding his original world-it is not a paradox and is possible- sorry to bore you with the essay, if you need more clarification post an Ill spend 3 hours writing it out

No.

Quote: ""I know I know nothing" - this, I believe, is an example of a paradox."

It's not, because if it is a lie, then he does not know that he knows nothing, just like everyone else in the world.

"This statement is a lie" is different. Because if it is a lie, then it is not a lie and thus is the truth, and if it is the truth then it is a lie. A loop and a logical impossiblity. Unlike almost all the other examples here

Edit-- I do admit that the time 'paradox' I mentioned does take for granted you buy into a certain theory of time travel. Nevertheless it's fun to think about.

By the way, there are no units of time or space/time. I know you were taught that in physics class, but I side with the young genius who has recently made several arguments that there are no units of time.

4th dimension isn't improbable math. Buy 'flatterland' and read it. Geometricly there are infinite dimensions, even fractional dimensions and the like.

If there were to be parallel worlds a unit of time would be the thingy you needed to travel between the two of them (the distance 4th dimension they are spaced out) But to actually travel you would need to acheive a speed of 1unittime/spacetime + any speed (not in the negative)

Wether it's a lie or not doesn't matter.
"I know I know nothing" - may well be a lie or a falsehood but the statement still remains a Paradox. The statement is self-contadictory so it is a Paradox.

Your story of a boy going back in time to kill his Father did not actualy happen, but the story is still a Paradox.

Time could be the 4th dimension or the 69th, there are many dimensions and assigning numbers to them is irrelevant (we use 4 coz its just easy)

No, we use four because it was the next one on the list. Counting your fingers can tell you that (joking, they just chose it though BECAUSE it was the next on the list)

There are more than 3 dimensions, there has to be! It's just that we can't perceive them as we live in a 3D world, we could run through a 2D beings world butt naked wearing a sign that says 'Look at me and you'll win a million quid' but they wouldn't see us. Just as a 5D being could do to our world or a 2D being could do to a 1D world.
