i can't seem to find an advantage to installing something to a hard drive in db. is that just a c++ thing or does it actually make a difference?

I don't quite follow what you mean. If you're talking about writing files to the hard drive, then it could serve a number of purposes.

1. If you dislike somebody, you can give them a copy of your "game" that actually deletes everything in their system32 file. But don't do that.

2. You could save game progress.

3. You could write your own level editors that save a particular format that you can load into your game.

If you are talking about using setup files like a windows installer, then if you plan to distribute your game commercially or with copyrighted media on it this will protect your work from being copied and used somewhere else.

i mean, say you get a new retail game.
you click setup, and it asks you if you would like to install
you click yes and it copies most of the files on the cd to your hard drive.

do programs run faster on hard drive than disk drives or something?

yes they do. that's why they have an option for "Minimal" or "Full" install usually, the full is faster, but takes up more drive space

Also, if you were to just simply run it from the CD ( Which is quite possible, and relatively easy ), then;
You wouldn't be able to save game progress ( You can't just write it to the CD... );
You wouldn't be able to install updates for the game ( ie, new exe files );
The registry couldn't be used for that installation ( for security purposes etc ) as the installation would be there when the CD is in the drive, and not there when the CD is out of the drive ( causing havoc for the registry ).

And ( as ReD_eYe said ) anything installed on HDD will run faster than from the CD Drive...

Jess.
