Hey everyone,

Lately when I'm not working on ROBOI, I'm working on a game called WordTris. The premise is pretty simple: lettered blocks fall from the top one at a time, and you must place thm to form words. The words can be formed either horizontally or vertically, and can be any word as small as 3 or as large as 8 characters! When a word is formed, it disappears, leaving the blocks on top of it to fall down, tetris-style! If you are savvy, you can expect multiple combos...

I use a dictionary that has approx. 30,000 words, names, and acronyms so everything imaginable should be in there One more note, if your word is made up of other smaller words, you get points for everything. For example, WALKS would give you points for both WALK and WALKS!

Here are a few screenies:

Looks like we've just formed a new word. The red block is a bonus block--- use it to zap a certain letter off of the complete board! Very handy for those nasty Q, X, and Z's...

Where should we place this letter?

Game over!

Please let me know what you think. This game is fully playable, so I just have to touch up the menus and add a few extra niceties. I will post the final game when finished

wow! another cool release coming up from Mr. Jeku!

I love these kind of games, I'm looking forward to playing it when released!

p.s. some kind of background image would make the game look more complete I think. something simple like the NES version of Tetris or something... or if you wanted to get fancy, some simple 3D effects in the background would be cool too

Me thinks Jeku has played Spelltris on the Amiga!!

Here's a screenshot I just took on my Amiga:

Instead of a red block to zap all the same letters, Spelltris has a special 'tick' block that does same thing.

Anyway, good luck as I enjoyed this game many years ago.

Boo!

@walaber - You're too nice to me! I would love to put something nice in the background of WordTris, but the fact of the matter is I am not really an artist. I'll see what I can do, though. Maybe a nice pre-rendered background shot from my artschool days

@Mitche - Thanks for the good words. I am looking at redoing the sprites. It only uses 4 sprites, and the letters are "pasted" over the grey sprite using the Text function, so it's kind of faking it hehehe.

@LamptonWorm - THanks

@spooky - Thanks for the cool screenshot! I have honestly never played anything like this game! I originally got the idea from Popcap Games' Bookworm. I was thinking that it would be cool to have the letters fall so there's a time limit to forming the words, where as Bookworm gives you all the time in the world! I also want to attract more female players as I know Tetris is a huge hit with females

Give bonuses for words like "Next", "Jimmy Choo" and "Armani", they come flocking.

Ooooh, naughty Batvink! Could be worse, I considered "Kitchen Sink".

Hey everyone,

I am almost finished this game, I just have a few more things to test out.

I have implemented both a local and an online high score system, so if you get more than 30 word matches in a game, it will ask if you want to submit your score online. If so, the game will take care submitting it to the DB and it will show you the current high scores. Sound good?

Due to several instances of people stealing others' games and changing copyright info, I've implemented several strong security features in the game I think the ways I have done it are reasonable and pretty strong, so when I release the game I will also probably release the source to those methods as well.

Here's a screenshot of the game so far. Please note that there is an option to hide the background image:

Please let me know what you think, thanks!

perhaps an option to use your own background image would be cool and easy to implement?

@walaber - I would love to implement something like that, but the current background image has my copyright info on it. Because of recent security concerns with people stealing games and redistributing them, I've made it so the background image can't be changed.

There is still two more days before release, so I may change my mind though

There are other ways to encrypt copyright info though. IE you could create a string array that is initialized to empty values...and then you could call a function that uses a loop and traverses the array & set it to your name...you don't even have to do anything with the string, just make it so it's there.

Oh here's an idea...do that, and make it that when you press a "cheat key", whatever is stored in the array appears. (And that would be your name!)

Hope that made any sense whatsoever to ya

well, just add a small .bmp along the bottom of the screen with your copywright info, and let the use choose a background for the rest of the screen!

@HZence - Yeah that makes perfect sense. I have added quite a bit of security with certain files in the distribution that can't be tampered with, and they have copyright data all over them. I will also implement a cheat key, however

@walaber - I have unlocked the background image so it can be swapped with whatever you choose now It'll be located in the media\graphics\bg.png file.

I would really like to see that. I was wondering the other day how i'm going to keep peoples grubby fingers out of my games! (no offense to those grubby fingered people i find it a complement when people want my game!)

You know, when i see an old lady slip and fall on the side walk, my first instinct is to luagh, but then i think, what if i where an ant? and she fell on me, it just doesn't seem so funny anymore.

R.O.B.O.I. is a programming game where, through a series of sequential microchips, you program the robot to exit each level. I'm still working on that about 50% of my "coding" time

Your games are very well done Jeku! WordTris is a big challenge, though unusually addictive. The only suggestions I can think of is like you mentioned, dropping letters based on a player's choices is an awesome thing. But, until then some oddball letters like Q and Z come up a little too often.
I also checked out your ROBOI game, and that was a lot of fun! I could not turn it off until I had beaten it! That is one of the most original concept's I have ever seen, and it works perfectly. If anything, you should invest your time in expanding ROBOI, adding more elements of coding in, making levels bigger, and hiring artists ( ).
