wow. i come back from a small break to find cmc advertising his "earn money from you clicking a link type thing", i'm glad the mods have taken action.

you wonder why some llrgt members dont come back here? (they are well respected db users.) and no doubt if they come back most people will think they are newbies.

cmc is an example of why this forum loses good members.

does cmc read the forum rules, it appears not. can you stand for more of his b.s.ing? i cant. he breaks the rules time after time and all you do is give me a slap on the wrist and do nothing?

i come on here to find my reputation has been dragged through the gutter by me flaming people like cmc. jeez

this forum needs to change, otherwise you'll lose a lot of talented coders (or they will not bother posting on here)

this forum needs to take note of who is a good coder and who isnt.

this forum has totally changed from when it was opened. from what it seems newbies rule the waves here.

enough of my rant.

your views

Hmm well I think this forum should have some sort of ratings(under the avatars of people) to show how much people have helped other people, and how many things they have put in the codebase, then we would be sure who was l33t and who was not

True forum user testomonial:

I left the forum earlier this week because of CMC along with a few other users causing spam problems. I hate to see my best resource for learning dark basic get thrown away because half the posts are none-sense. Something needs to be done, and I still call for something along the lines of "points system" or mods being able to temporarily ban.

Although I said I left, I still hover around and post occasionally because the forums are too damn addicting. At least now I can finally limit myself and actually get some work done.

(Besides, if I stop posting now, Hamish will catch up to my glorious post count)

(Hope this thread can at least accomplish what to do with the senseless spam)

Wasn't against Raven necessarily, just his opinions - and no, it wasn't because everyone else was doing it.

Never was against Raven either.

(Moved comments about Raven to Source Box, to help avoid any off-topic stuff)

Perhaps removing post counts altogether? Fortunately we don't have it under our names (like most forums) that make it a constant reminder to spam, but the fact that it still exists makes some people feel compelled to post the most utterly useless trash ever.

I think post counts are here to... o wait they have no purpose, do they? Yes I agree exeat, get rid of post count = get rid of spam. Ive noticed this "desire to get posts up" in many people, including Mr. X. Now obviously since I said that, he will throw profanity and hate my way, I dont care. It needs to be said for him and the rest of the Mr. X's out there.

It's only 1 user. Quite frankly I think that we're all mature enough to ignore them. It seems not.

well to be honest, its only cos of people like CMC being here that i come here. I hardly ever need to use the help boards because of the IRC room, so now the only thing that bring me to these forums is the chance to flame studpid ppl

I think most people are sensible enough to ignore it after all it is only a few posts in the general talk section. There arn't many forums that have such a low level of stupid posts as this one.

Kinda funny all the posts I have seen from the op are flaming people in stupid threads that do nothing but bump up the rubbish threads adding to the susposed problem.
Stop being part of the problem and start being part of the solution, post some intresting threads and stop flameing the bad ones and the bad posts will fall out of sight.

A while back, when the flame war between Simple and Raven was at its peak, I suggested that a separate "Flaming" forum be set up.I still stand by this, it would give people a chance to vent their anger, and give other people the opportunity to laugh at the people stupid enough to post there

Quote: "Perhaps removing post counts altogether?"

Now that would be a good solution imho opinion, I know of some members who have relatively low post counts, but a high help rate, and others who just spam and post useless topics just for the hell of it.

Its not a bug, its a feature!

if we all simply not answer certain threads started by certain people the threads would fall away like mentioned above. Simply protest by silence - That's my new vow.

Yes, a flame forum would be good.

I think we should remove the post count and add a little button next to all the other ones (like profle and web and msn) that says "Was this post helpful", and people other than yourself click on it, and it adds that to a little counter below your name. And we could have ranks based on these numbers. Raven would have a n00b ranking. RobK and IanM and TCA and all thems would have like "uber helper" ranks or something

I echo the remarks above about maturity. If someone annoys you, ignore them. Theres no more effective way of getting rid of someone by everyone systematically shunning them. Its also a great way of making malefactors mend their ways.

Mind you, I also like the "helpfulness" ranking idea. I'd like a ranking for content and a rank for humour.

the only problem with the ranking system is how could abuse be prevented from someone who may just simply not like you and consistently vote against you - regardless of how helpful or informative you were to others? Then again if only bad votes came from a select few then it wouldn't matter. Might even be better to have a Plus/Minus Ratio like in sports where positive and negative votes negate each other leaving only the difference in plus or minus... like if 10 vote good and 8 vote bad you would have a plus/minus rating of +2. -or conversely- if 10 vote bad and 8 vote good then plus/minus rating would be -2

just a thought

You could report abuse and the mods should be able to prevent that person from voting in a set amount of time.

Or, take away negative ratings altogether and just have a +ve one. Would be much easier

they had karma but it wan't a representation of anything. some people went around applauding or booing people when they were bored. others found loopholes and gve themselves insane amounts of karma. so it ended up just being a little number under your name that didn't mean anything, unless you were one of the few people who threatened to leave because "nobody liked them" because they had 1 more negative karma than positive. jasonb threatened to leave a few times IIRC. besides it rarely reflected anyone's true karma - some helpful forum members had nothing but negative karma (i think mr. bitmap or someone had that).

overall the karma system wasn't worth anything and wouldn't really solve much here either.

yeah true. Seems this whole conversation would be moot if someone in authority would put their foot down on some of these skells.
Currently some of the mods are trying to steer things straight with antiquated means and it's gettimg them/us nowhere, sadly.

The +- thing could work if only mods and admins had the right to give u positives and negatives. That way it would be an accurate representation of how helpful (or not) you are.

or, have it so only mods can do it. or like, if someone gets a certain high number of points, they become "mini-mods" and they can do it too, since the mods are already busy since there arent too many of them.

CMC should be banned, he should have been banned after claiming those games for his own.
Now he should be banned for posting spam.

So come on, ban the little git. We're at the point where everytime we post something it's on page 2 within a day because of all the spam. I hope Rich makes some changes soon, like adding more forums to break up general discussion (like a game coding thoery forum and maybe even a general gaming forum too).

I am trying to lay off of CMC - I vowed to not post on the next 13 of his (her) threads. My time is almost up, and I'm getting anxious! I really wanted to jump on his (her) "web development" thread, but I must resist until my cool down time has expired.

Notice how CMC hasn't posted on this thread about him (her)?

edit: removed comment about ???

Post counts are good for guessing the experiance level of the poster... But I guess the active date works for that too. Probably gives a better clue than counts does.

Also, I like the idea of MODs giving points, but thats not reliable either...

How about tracking number of codes added to code base or maybe just a flag to indicate some posting. I posted one, but its was done anonymously, so I can't update it.

Or maybe scoring for games submitted to the showcase .... I have 4, all turned down for one reason or other ...

ahh...

i guess if ur only allowed to reply once someone else has already replied would be good. and what i was saying about limmitting the ammount of new threads, well instead, have some kind of system where we get creditted for making serius/useful posts, and for every 20 good/bad marks, we get allowed/disallowed an extra post per day... or summit
