Screen shots cannot show all of the special effects that the game uses, and hardly do justice to the visuals in the game.

Space Corps is a series of games I have been producing for around 15 years, this version features ship and some weapon graphics from the original Amiga version.

This version is a 2D playing field space ship combat game with over 90 ships, multiple weapons and a lot of special effects using 3D techniques.

It is intended to be the battle engine for a simplified galaxy conquest style game. The player will control a ship during the battles.

Battle can be fought with up to 50 ships a side although this requires a fast processor. The graphics card requirements are very low despite the many special effects.

Special effects certainly look nice, I think the ships look a bit on the small side though, and the grainy blue/red particles detract from the overall visual effect.

The last game from Banshee was a bit rushed so make sure you give this one plenty of polish

I think the grainy red/blue particles you are referring to is the radar Rob and not a particle effect, at the top centre of the screen.

This has been quick to write too, wrote it over the last day and a half. Extranjero was definately too big a bite for the time I had available for it, but this is a simple game. I'll probably have it finished by early-mid next week.

WOW! and I though I was the only one coding a pseudo-2d space game (mine is elite with a 2d gameplay )

Very nice work!

btw if what's keeping you at 50 units is collision processing then maybe I can help... but you seem to know exactly what youre doing

Nah there's no collision system for ship bumping, the game doesn't really need it. The 50 units per side is more down to the AI calculations which are pretty hefty to make them fight intelligently. To be honest with more than 25 a side is just a mess for gameplay purposes anyway.

Media is ready for our main game production now so i'm back to working on that, but I do intend to finish this one next week some time.

All this coding is the plus side of being injured , the downside is three weeks off work which sounds good until the rent bill arrives...

Lol yeah the AI is really hard on the frame_rate , i'm all focused on collision response but i'm not even sure if I'm going to use it or at least use it no-friendly-fireish (no collision among ships on the same team)...

The quick answer to that is to let ships bullets from the same side pass through each other, I haven't done that with this though because I wanted friendly fire in the game.

I'm still not sure whether to bundle this out as a battle game (ala the last Space Corps) or to write a strategy element to it, at the moment it is a battle engine with no means of generating a battle.

What about adding the ability to script ship models and capabilities? It would make a sweet tool for play by e-mail gaming if you could pass a random seed to the battle and make it play the same way for the GM and the players.

One of my hobbies is writing (and selling) hand moderated PBEM space games and a tool like that would be a blast.

Once you've seen the final game Zircher give me an email and tell me what you'd need doing to adapt it to your needs, then give me the sign up details to play too

Are the ships and such 2D graphics or 3D models? Will they be replacable? Say you want to make a mod where your ships have custom paint jobs or perhaps even go as far as to make unofficial Star Wars and StarTrek mods?

I'd really like to see some of those explosions in action. Any chance of a teaser movie in the future?

They are 2D. They had to be, half the motivation for writting this was finding all the original graphics from the Amiga game on a backup CD. However they are billboarded and tilt when they turn for a little extra added depth.

Currently I have a new comer to the Banshee team developing the strategy side of the game with the intention of using this game to drive the battle sequences. There should be more news on this soon.

At the moment I am more focused on our other release which hasn't been announced here yet - but you can see some screenies on the Banshee web page - it's an online version of a sort of Scorched Earth / Worms game using our new game server installation.

Wow, that looks relly good. Specially the backgrounds look so beautiful!
It seems graphically there has changed a lot since Space Corps 1, but are there any gameplay enhancements? I mean is it basically the same game like Space Corps 1 or is it a completely new gameplay experience??
Anyway it actually doesn't matter if there are gameplay tweaks or there aren't cuz the graphics alone look so impressiv that I'll certainly buy/download (or whatever) the game

Quote: "is it a completely new gameplay experience??"

The control method is different now and the weaponry is all different. The AI has been written afresh and is subtely different and the ships are more fragile. In principle it is the same game.

The strategy side of the game is all new of corse, i've not heard from Paul in a week or so - last I heard he was doing a prototype in Access before he began work. Whenever I check he isn't online, we seem to keep different hours unfortunately.

Hopefully i'll have more news soon. I'm glad that there are positive responces to the graphics, I hope that you are still satisfied when you see it all moving.

It is just a simple game, so I hope you are not dissapointed by that because it is not a full Banshee game with loads of effort gone in to it.

It will be a free download like other Banshee games. If the team make money from games at all in the near future it will be from flogging adverts in the game rather than by selling it, otherwise not so many people would get to play Banshee games. Mostly though we're funding the computer games and web site by giving sponsorship out on the Go Kart team in exchange for services which is how Banshee is managing to stay advert free at the moment.

Interesting, tell Paul to shake a leg or I might be after his job.

I can definiately see some application for this game in the PBEM (Play By E-Mail) arena.

the visuals look great, but the ships are pretty badly pixelated. I believe this is due to the fact that they are rotated. Still, I'd recommend using smoother edges on the ships with real alpha.
what method are you using for the ships? sprites/plains?

I can't remember where I read it, but I believe that he's using rotated planes that even banked slightly when they turned.

ah. well.
that's what I would've used too (actually I did), but then the pixelation must be related to the images. Filter off?

I spoke to Paul today, things are moving ahead slowly so I think we'll see a release in a month or two so this is unlikely to be Banshee's next release.

The images are currently broken and you can find out about the massive struggle I am currently fighting with my web site here (http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=31084&b=2).

However the web host itself is all working still and you can view the images by going directly to the IP# of the machine, it is only the name bansheestudios.com that is down: http://193.109.197.15/banshee/

Yes absolutely, the texture images are easily replaceable for your PBeM project because you just change the image files in the ship directory. I have never hidden my media yet, and dont feel the need to do so.

Quote: "perhaps even go as far as to make unofficial Star Wars and StarTrek mods?"

I have no plans for Star Trek, but I have a different game that is Star Wars orientated - well I have the beginnings of a game, but news of that is for another day because it is too early to announce. A teaser has been flying around of it, but i've taken it much further since.

Quote: "Any chance of a teaser movie in the future?"

Not yet. I might do an intro movie, I might not. It depends whether a crow flies West over a nearby cornfield.

I'd like to see some of the screen shots as short a animation. Perhaps have it do a sequential screen dump and then convert those files into an AVI or MPEG.
