you have a basket with apples in it(unknown number of apples). One apple duplicates every 1 minute(2 becomz 4, 4 becomz 8...etc). the basket is full with apples after one hour(60 minutes). here's the question:
WHEN did the apples reach half the basket?

I think he meant that any single apple that exists creates a duplicate of itself. In other words, the amount of apples in the bascket doubles each minute. 1 becomes 2; 2 becomes 4 ; 4 becomes 8.

This can be represented by 2^n where n is any integer number starting from 0. (a is the number of minites it takes to be full) So if the Basket is full in 60 minutes which is denoted by 2^a, the answer to the question would be 2^(a-1).

2^60 = 2^a
therefore
60-1 = a - 1
therefore
59 = the number of minites it takes for the bascket to be halffull

if two apples become 4 then that means each apple in the basket would add one more you see =).

Yes i can see the reasoning on why it'd be 59 minutes if it takes 59 minutes to become half full then that means that at 60 minutes it would be totally full since each apple would duplicate. Wow wish i would have gotten here sooner hehe.

I see it as one apple (only one) duplicates every one minute so

clock as minutes, apples as apples

begin
clock=0 apples=1
clock=1 apples=2
clock=2 apples=3
clock=3 apples=4
...
clock=59(60 min elapsed) apples=60

therefore
clock=29 apples=30

therefore my earlier answer of 31 is wrong

therefore its 29...

or 3.1459, or 1788835.099999364

29-final answer

yes normally that would be all good but...its an unknown amount of apples; you have no clue if there are 60 apples or 100 apples.

on top of that, 01DIGITAL10 after every minite

Yup, I'm saying 59 as well. Very simple reasoning, it's doubling and it's full at 60 so therefore it must have been half at 59.

Also, if you want to see it like CR worked his out, you could just double a number until you were happy:

We may assume 64 is full (although it doesn't really matter), so just look down the list to find half the number. It's the previous one so it's just one minute before the full basket of apples, which has already stated to be 60 mins so of course it's 59.

It doesn't matter that you don't know how many there were to begin with or how many constitute a full basket. No matter what numbers you will use (considering you always use the right formula (doubling in this case)), you'll always get the same result - 59. I'm just trying to explain that you can answer the question on multiple ways and get the same answer.

It is 59 minutes.

If it is full at 60 minutes, then you know that the number for half of that is 1 minute less (as the number doubles every minute)

I love these kind of puzzles, here are a few easy logic ones:

1. A man is dead inside a house in a pool of water. There is no way anyone can get in or out of the house. There is a noose in the room but its 10ft off the floor. How did the man die?

2. There is a room with a light bulb in, and there are three toggle switches outside the room on the floor above. One of the switches turns the light bulb on, but you don't know which. When any of the switches are on, the doors to the room below lock shut so you can't go in.
How do you find out which switch turns the light on?

3. A plane crashes on the border between France and Italy, where do they bury the survivors?

2.You flick up the first switch, wait a little, flick the switch then flick up the second switch and enter to the room and touch the bulb. If it cold then is the third switch, if it on then is the second switch,but if it off but warm is the first switch.

As said above by many people the answer is 59 minutes, but only if on the next duplication at the 1 hour point the basket doesnt overflow (i.e. too many apples). If that's the case, it doesn't have a proper answer. Who said doubling from 32 to 64 won't overflow the basket, for example?

comando300 answer to 2. is wrong becuase you can't go into the room with toggle2 on!

Here's one!

You are given 8 bags of gold coins + 1 bag of fake gold coins.
You are also given a set of scales that require a coin to be inserted into the top. You are give a coin to put in the scales. These scales are very accurate, but only give you 1 reading. You cannot remove anything from the scales, or add anything to them once you have your reading.

The real gold coins weigh 10grams The fake coins weigh 0.1 grams more than the real gold coins. You have to correctly predict every bag of coins with your 1 reading. How do you do it?

That's simple. If it doubles every minute, and the basket is full at 60 minutes, then its half full 1 minute ago. So 59 minutes, the basket is half full.

I'm pretty sure it takes two weighings mate!

-(WEIGHING 1) Three on each side of the scales and three left off the scales.
-If they balance, the three on the floor have the fake bag, else the side that goes up has the fake bag.
-(WEIGHING 2) Clear the scales and put 1 bag on each side from the lighter 3. If they balance, the fake bag is the one on the floor. Otherwise the one which goes up is the fake bag. The rest are true gold.

I'm sure this one is two weighings. If its 1 weighing, I'm clueless!

when they feel differnt, weigh the lighter one, if its .1g then it tis the fake :p

heres one of my own:
A man is on an island, he has a boat a fox, a rabbit and a head of lettus(sp?). When left alone, the fox will eat the rabbit, and the rabbit will eat the lettus. he can only have one other thing in the boat with him at a time. how does he get accros with everything still in tact
ps->he cant leave them alone on either side of the water (ie bring rabbit over then the lettus, that wouldnt work, and he cant bring the fox over first, because the rabbit will eat the lettus.)
