I am creating a 2D space shooter in which the space ship moves up and down on the left side of the screen and shoots at attacking ships on the right side of the screen. Would anyone happen to know where i can find sprites for a ship that also include sprites for it going up and down on the screen. Like the ship is leanin left or right to go up or down. I have ones where it is just slightly rotated buut that is not want i am wanting

thanks

simple solution... draw your images on graph paper and use ms paint to plot them in pixel by pixel.

Simple solution? Are you kidding? Horrible boring solution more like.
I'd use Anim8or, but then you have to make a model, and render it. You could just hand draw it with an art package. There is a trick to making ships lean. You just remove two lines of pixels from the top half of the ship, move the wings up two pixels. Try it, that's how I made the Rtype graphics.

Great Idea Pincho. I didnt really feel like tediously making my own sprites. So thanks for that little trick, it worked perfectly

Thanks

I really stink at drawing and modeling. *sigh* I usually just find preexisting sprites and models for my games.

I can't draw my way out of a paper bag. So, I make spaceships in DoGA and tell it to render to the size of my sprite. I then rotate the whole model a little bit and render again. The whole process doesn't take too long and I gain the perks of proper lighting and angle without have go down to the pixel level and tweak things.

After I have the whole batch done, I batch load them into MSPE or PSP and change all the background colors to transparent and save the sprites as PNG files.

what you could do is just take screenshots of your favourite spaceship games and then past them into paint or somehting more advanced and tweak them until youve got something that you can call your own.

Also if youre not very good a drawing a good tip is to draw a space ship on a4 (large as you can). colour it with pencil roughly. scan it in and then reduce it right down to say 50x50 pixel (or whatever)

youll be amazed how good it will look.

hope that helps

Ajay, we're just trying to help you by helping yourself.

Finding pre-made royalty free artwork in the format that you need is not an easy thing. But, by investing some time in learning how to do it yourself, you'll gain a skill and not be stuck waiting for someone to luckily stumble by with the URL you need or has the free time to make them for you.

Try DoGA CGA L1 or L2, they're free to download and dirt simple to use. I bet you can make those sprites you need tonight with just a little practice. My son was building space fleets with DoGA when he was 10 years old. Give it a spin, it doesn't cost a dime to try you hand at it.

PS. DoGA also exports to .X format. There's no reason why you can't build a '2D' shooter using 3D models. From my perspective, that's easier than trying to do it with sprites. The L-Type game demo is an example of that idea.

Sorry if my last post sounded a little rude, it was purely unintended. Thanks for the link Underlord, I'm gonna go look at those sprites when i am done with this message. Thanks to Zircher's post, I think that I am gonna try to learn how to do some of my own artwork for my games. On top of it being really cool to do it myself, it would overall make it easier as long as i get good at it.
I am getting ready to try out that doga program. Thanks all for your advice and help.

later

YOur sprites are ace! This is what Im saying, its pretty simple to get some nice stuff happening with minimal work. Id much rather see stuff like this, sprites and what not, pasted up , than seeing the subject of the "some dead green guy" thread!

Anyway, spaceships are fun and making them bank is really easy(as you have seen here) so there is no excuse for anyone not to have a go themselves!

I dont know if there already is one or not, but could we turn this into a thread in which people post all of the sprites that they have made, so they can show off thier work, and allow other people to use. Ive decided that i am gonna at least try to do all of my artwork for my game. And i would like to have one thread where i can post all my stuff as well as have everyone post theirs.

Underlord,Underlord,Underlord go screw your neck into a jar for all I care. Im a professional graphic artist working in the game industry and the fact I get a pay check for my art work is enough praise for me. So lay off on your appraisal of my personality, you dont know me, OK? Ill post some of the artwork from my current project if your actually interested, but I dont care what you say. This is a dev page. "dead green guy" was not really appropriate for this forum, I dont believe that he was for ingame graphics. Now, Ive been programming for about 6 weeks and Ive already been helping people with their code, so Im a fast learner. Is somone asks my opinion Im gonna give it, positive or negative. If you cant understand that then I cant help you.

As for my "sig" how exactly am I going to get "more power" by writing innane comments of some online fourm? Of course its not relevent, what do you want me to say? Yours isnt exactly a piece of litarary genius is it?

Now back off before you get flamed, OK?

Use test sprites, show it to people, and if they like the gameplay maybe someone will come forward and do proper animation for you. You never know. Sometimes messy graphics can look good anyway.

Glad to help. If you have any questions about how to use it, where to find extra parts, etc. Feel free to ask in this forum (3D chat) or on the DoGA BBS.

Parts availability depends on which DoGA version you use. If it is L1 or L2 you'll need to edit the parts libraries. If you have L3 you can directly read in SUF file from the menu and create SUF files from DXF files using the Object Convertor.

Check out my DoGA support page, I have links to hundreds of new parts and I have tutorials on how to edit and manage parts libraries.
