I've just found out the figures for this year and been handed alot of other figures due to an award ceremony that is up soon...

What would everyone here figure is the BEST selling game of all time?

This game has sold 22million copies world wide in the 3years it has been out!
It has several upgrade/modification games which also rank within this top titles list!

The best year it had was in 2000 and had US|UK|European retail of 1,400,000|750,000|2,300,000 copies respectively!

which had the second place game Half-Life beaten by almost 3x the figure in its best year!!

Ya'll know it isn't Half-Life now so take your guesses...
This year its sequal has over 2million PREorders, so it looks like it is to stay at the top for some time to come.

I'll let everyone take a guess at this and tell ya'll in 24hours

The Sims... I hate that game, when I start to play I cannot stop and it takes all my day playing that... I have all the sims, but not the online one ( not even know it's out ). Cause if I get The Sims Online I will totally lose my life . Well, I think it's The Sims

Oh N64's Zelda... I played all that game with my mom, I think she liked that one more then I did... we fight to find all golden spiders and sometimes we needed some magazines... the story was great, models, map everyhing... Thats a game to remember... not like the FFseries... they are all boring... same playability since the very first one

I even bought Zelda/Ocarina on the N64. The N64 version came out around then (3 years ago), but Zelda is older.

Oh I thought of another, but I wouldn't think it would take 2mil preorders...THPS series (hmmm...THPS1 might have been released in '99!?), hmm...MGS (is there a third!?, does Substance counted as 3rd)...Oh well, that's my other 2 guesses.

Can anyone tell me what game, that's in the Guiness book of world records, is the single most expensive game to develop in history? Clue: the game cost £50 000 000 to make!

It was Shenmue. They actually looked over weather reports of 86-87 so you can choose it after you've completed the game, with the original weather in recorded history.

Despite it's immense size, there were only 3 real life adverts, Timex, some bank and another one.

lol my stupid asbentmindedness

Oki Warcraft3 DID NOT sell 4million upon release otherwise our lovely neighbours would have their ass's against these huge windows like the last time they beat us at something

In fact the TOTAL figure I have for that game is in the region of 620,000 yeah thats worldwide total since release.

A few of you guessed right...
The Sims was the Biggest Selling Game of all time.

Solitare was packaged with windows, its like a game that comes with your graphics card - its being given away and therefore doesn't count as there is no money per sales being made

The Sims have sold wait for it
12million Copies Since release which beats the second best game Half-Life by almost 8million copies!

ALL of its addon packs are also within the charts all of which have sold more than games like Quake III on thier own.

Maxis's new incarnation TheSimsOnline has now reached the 2million sales mark, and it isn't due for release until mid-December

On the part of Mario, who here knows where his original home was?
The plummer from the Brooklyn wasn't always loyal to Nintendo hehee

I'm not sure which was the most expensive game to make, however I know that Tiberium Sun cost $40,000,000 to make.
Insane really because the CGI guys over at Las Vegas really arn't very good at blending Real with Artificial things hehee
Generals certainly is a step in the right direction thou

I had a binary file copy of the Atari 800 Mario Brothers game copyright 1982 Nintendo. That was the first time I saw the character.

It played rather nicely.

Yeah The Sims is pretty cool. Not an original idea, basically the creators took our real life smashed in a tight PC-CDRoom box and sold it But it's great to play, but hard to stop to play... I dont have even installed cause it always delay my projects A pity though Sims Ville was cancelled long ago

I've been addicted to games like the Sims, since I first played SimCity2000, I only lost interest in that game when I learnt the cheats, cause when running low on money you just type iamacheat !!! it just totally took the fun outta the game.
but as for the best game ever.....
ask me every week and I'll give you a different game that I really like. Last week it was the New Grand Theft Auto and this week I've been addicted to playing the new James Bond game - Night Fire. It's good!

Mario was originally an Arcade Cabinet, as was it's predecessor Donkey Kong, which was Marios first game. Damn I loved Donkey Kong, especially with the smell of frying fish and chips at my local chippie.

The Sims IS the best selling Pc game of all time, even if u don't include the add-ons. Personally I think it was a great idea but I would have added MANY improvements which I won't list now as I am currently working on a similar project in DBPro

As for the best game ever... umm
Doom (PC), Nights into Dreams (Saturn), Mario64 (N64), Tetris (GB), FFVII (PS1), Sonic (MD/Genesis), Lemmings (Amiga) and prolly many more :-p

lol... i think i announced that already

personally my favourite game of all time would have to be Elite2, its kinda what i've grown up on. Elite -> Elite Plus -> Elite2 -> First Encounters -> Elite2 (hahaa)
First Encounters was just a failed experiement really should never have been released.

I prefer'd the fighting in the original, but really the second one was far more enjoyable on the whole

Though i'm still addicted to the TSO ... the playtest is gonna be over soon (although personally think the game is still WAAAAAAY to buggy for release) - but my copy is preorder'd (blasted $50 + $100 for the year of subscription)
But I can't wait for it really ... especially the fabled Item Developer we've all been hearing about in the test forums, damn it sounds sweet. I'm gonna have to populate the whole TSO world with my creations.
Already got a tonne of ideas, like a Stargate Theme
Gonna be outstanding fun.

but whats TSO??

And how come you always seem to be doing cool stuff Raven, like beta testing games and doing gfx for games.

Not Dissing Raven at all but its quite easy to get into beta testing games, they're always asking for them on the official sites, and in the Gamespy.com email. I've tried a few games for them pre release, including the Sims Online!

I agree that Elite 2 was the best version, I hear theres a conversion of 1&2 for GameBoyAdvance in the pipeline which would be cool, might just b a rumour tho, I haven't checked.

I still have a copy of First Encounters and it hasn't worked properly on a single freaking PC I've ever owned! It was buggier than DBPro! j/k

Well patch 1.06 actually solved alot of problems, but they kinda lost the feel in First Encounters ... I still prefer'd Elite2.

Even after 10years i'm still searching for the Fabled Thargoid Ship
Can't believe there is still a £300,000 reward for the first person to give the name of the system it is in

As for beta testing... it really depends on what game it is, what company and what kinda people you know.
The Sims Online is hardly a good example of trying to get into a beta test as for AOL customers all of us were given a free opertunity to join in, everyone has been able to order a Beta CD for $5|10 for almost 2months now - and I mean literally order it.

Most tests you sign up and its more pure luck if you're chosen or not, but having a more exotic setup usually helps
Everyone has a Pentium4 or AMD 1,000Mhz+ system with GeForce card, blah blah, not many people use MatroxG cards.

For games here, they have very strick guidelines and althought Earth&Beyond was basically as good as an open beta - it is an online game and required a large base test, whereas Renegade and C&C Generals have had literally 1,000 placements worldwide for testing.

It's a lil stupid to say that getting into tests is easi because there are some game that even I can't get my hands on because they just never test outside of the company walls. Suchas Elite4 - as Frontier systems are reluctant for beta testing of ANY kind outside.
I've not even been able to get screenshots as of yet

Final Fantasy 11 has also been tricky to get my hands on... I have it but the current server is based only in Japan.

Search site as they usually have applications for Beta's just apply as everything is worth a try

Rv: I have to call you on this. Half Life at 4 million copies is number two? Uh. No.

GTA 1&2 sold over 4.5 million copies before the release of GTA 3 (http://www.avault.com/news/displaynews.asp?story=2232001-163258) so you have to be wrong on at least ONE of those stats ;o).

Bioware has also sold more than 4.5 million units of BGII and they've sold 1.5 million of the original (http://www.bioware.com/bioware_info/about/).

So, fess up. Where'd you get your stats from?

Vegeta:
Will C&C Generals be as well balanced and fun to play as RA2? Can you turn of the super weapons? That must have been the best option in RA2, made it the only playable westwood game ever =) Generals looks amazing though.

I love Renegade, I play it a little now and then online. Still don't understand why you get so little points for repairing wehicles that is operated by a team mate. It's really pointles staying repairing your team's vehicles at the front gaining almost no points when you can run back to base and buy a new tank and shoot yourself loads of points. Since you're on the inside why don't you tell them =)

Elite2 is amazing, I don't understand how they get that game into one single floppy. My dad bought it when he bought a 456 to his jobb. I always got killed by pirates when I tried to play so it got boring fast. I had a Mac once and I enjoyed Escape Velocity, it's the same thing but in 2D. And now I see that the latest version Nova is to be ported to PC. Maybe it's something for you? http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/evn/

The figures I have are the actual sales figures which have been released by EA projection reports, it's also the fact that EA are up for the award for holding the largest holding for such sales.
I'm not sure where these guys get thier stats from and to be honest don't care ... if what i've got here is wrong, then its EA who has it wrong - and I kinda find that hard to believe

That all aside C&C Generals hasn't been made by the Red Alert2 team, and for the better in my own opinion.
The team kinda butchered a good engine and made a complete farse of a whole game...

Generals is FAR more of a balanced game this time around, so there's not really any real advantages to being one particular side unless you can use them tactically. The whole game has a much more real life basis, and alot of the units and terrain will seem more identifiable.
Based on the Emperor Engine, however anyone who's used that engine will probably start to cry and ask why
The core has been rewritten and alot of the bugs from really that first venture into 3D RTS have been solved.
Alot of the terrain and levels are now setup and to guarentee a decent position and win you'll have to actually learn to use terrain and units rather than simply stockpile as yup the emphasis this time in on becomming a stragetic master

I think thats about all I can really say about it, because i'm not sure when the official reviews are due.
As soon as they're out i'll be free to say much more, but this is for sure - this new game is going to just be a well ern't next step in the RTS genre.
Oh and the graphics are extremely stunning too
