particles and or billboarded plains

both should look pretty good but the particles may be 2 small.

we are not outnumbered! we are just in a target rich enviroment!

Think of a plain as a flat transparent surface that you can size and apply a texture to. That is how many people do 2-D games instead of sprites because they are a little faster.

This answer is from a newbie and is worth exactly what you payed for it.

Wasting CPU Cycles since the 286 was a hot machine.

Oh right so billboard is litterally an (american style) billboard, flat as a pancake.. Srry I'm a Brit and for some bizzare reason my brain decided that a billboard plain was a technical term for a specific type of plain object..lol my bad.

A good example of this technique can be found in the Alienware downloadable games.. the Igoe bros.(banshee studios) game extranjo has an alien ship right at the start that shows you how this would work. (you can just make out the edges of the planes as the rocket lift off again)
