After playing with Darkbasic for 1 week or so, I found the Purebasic. I don't know if it is the right place here. But I say it anyway... Here are my first impressions with Darkbasic:

Being an old AMOS programmer on Amiga computer, I remembered my childhood with Darkbasic. I was 15, when I was using AMOS everyday... After that, I wens assembly coding on MC68k, and on x86. Then switched to C# both on DOS and Unix.

So that's why, the Darkbasic comes to me as a toy. Ok, it can do something. And pro version can perhaps do more. But I guess, people should call the non-pro version for educational purposes only!

Ok, I can see, some people firing on me. But I just had to say my idea. And Purebasic is better for utility programming, and windows integration. And I must say, Darkbasic executables are gigantic. There should be some optimizations with the linker, to get smaller sizes. Whatever you do, even if you just print one word, you get 1.5MB exe file.

There are ways around the filesize issue (see the last newsletter for specifics).

PureBasic is a VERY good language, but if you start compiling in all of its 3D, sound, joystick, file handling, string handling, text handling (etc) functions - the file size DOES start to creep up significantly. Personally, I use them both, and I work for TGC. Even I can recognise the merits of PureBasic and for apps, it's great. For full complete games, it's still got a way to go though - and there hasn't been a new version of it for ages. I check back every other week just to see, but no luck yet.

Cheers,

Rich

Yeah, PureBasic is great for applications, but it isn't good for 3D games. And DarkBasic is great for games. I have PureBasic and my DarkBasic is coming in the mail.

I agree, Darkbasic can be an easier game programming tool. But purebasic is really low level. Thank you for sharing ideas, and for honestly talking about both products in Darkbasic forum.

I have Dark Basic Professional and have owned it for roughly 8 months. I'm very happy with it.

I've also stumbled upon PureBasic and am going to buy it soon.(Right now I'm just playing with the PB demo).

My plan is to use PB to develop Dlls for DBP. PB will help benefit my DBP projects greatly, and if I ever need an app. I'll have PB.

Really, PB and DBP go together like glue.

well......really PB is really good for windows apps and I've done some programs in a more easy way than doing it in VB 6.0. About 3D....is cr*p, the 3D isn't too optimized in PB, but it has some 2D effects that DB can't do...

but DB is very good for 3D Games
