sounds like you don`t have the correct version of directx, Pro NEEDS 9.0b, classic is best on 8.1, that message means that the program couldn`t get anything back from directx to draw in (as in memory), so do you have 8mb minimum video mem (if you have an integrated chipset you may need to alter the settings, you will still get poor performance from an integrated chipset though).

PC1: P4 hyperthreading 3ghz, 1gig mem, 2x160gig hd`s, ATI radeon 9800 pro gfx, 6 way surround sound, PC2: AMD 1.2ghz, 512mb ram, FX5200 ultra gfx, stereo 16 bit soundblaster, ups.

I have Direct x 9 or higher, could it be possible that my version is too high? the patches that I download don't seem to help. Is there a way to take Direct X completely off?

DX is permanant, once you got it you keep it (that isn`t strictly true, there are some 3rd party apps to remove it..but they can trash your system and AFAIK there are non done for 9.0b), try running a couple of the DB demo programs, and try removeing DB and then re-installing after a reboot, make sure you have your antivirus off while you install, AV`s are one of the worst offenders for trashing installs, also try re-installing DX, it`s not the first time someone has had a corrupted directx installation.

Mentor.

edit: what gfx card do you have?, you can check from control panel/system/device manager/display or right click the screen and select properties/settings and see what it says under display

I downloaded some game off of this website that i was pretty sure uses direct x and it worked fine. My other games like battlefield that must use direct x, work fine.

I reinstalled Dark Basic as welll as direcx x 9.0b runtime and took my AV off both times.

Gforce 4 mx 440 is my Graphics card.

None of these worked so i'm going to look at drivers for my graphics card and try the minimum install for DB.

does the monster hunt tutorial work? that checks most DX stuff.

also,

exactly what were you doing at the time you got this error?
Usually I get that error when 2 apps try to use DX at the same time.

That error only happened the very first time DB failed on me so it may have been that i started DB twice or something. The Monster tutorial on my comp is in some db format so i cant open it since i cant open db but if it's on this site or you know where i can download it from i will try it. I have tried: installing the minimum install, installing the latest drivers for my video card, latest drivers for windows Xp, and various combinations of these including updating or not updating the latest patch for DB. I've been pretty bored since it stopped working it's been like 15 days now i guess the only solution left is FIRE and LOTS of it!

the monster hunt fails to run????
You are using DBC and not DBPro right?

I have DBC113 (not enhanced) running under Win98 and WinXP
and DBP5.2 running under Win98 DX9 SIS (no 3D card)
and under WinXP DX9 generic 3D card (never heard of the card).

Exactly which version of DB are you running and what system specs?

Day 17

to code master: "it happens to me every the time i compile but it works fine? !" are you talking about yourself? if you are why are you asking a question? if you are trying to quote me db goes black every time i start it, nothing works fine.

to waffle: i am using DBC.with and without the 113 patch it has the same problem. running under XP. Dircet x 9.01b. Nvida Gforce 4 MX 440.
