Sigh, this really should have been posted in the 3D Chat section.

There is no best. What works for you, what you can afford, that determines what is best for you.

I'm cheap since game dev is my hobby. What is best for me is Milkshape 3D. I own Hash Animation Master and trueSpace 4.3, but I'm not skilled in their use. I'm more likely to buy CharacterFX if I need more animation tools. Sure, 3DS Max, Lightwave, and Maya are the bomb. But, I they are well beyond my price range and I do not condone piracy.

Zircher's right, it depends entirely on your skills and cash availability. It also depends on whether you have a mortgage, live-in lover and/or expensive car on hp.

"3D Animation" also covers a broad spectrum. DB is a 3D animation program, but so is TrueSpace and you would never use one in place of the other (unlike Pizzas and Beer Mats, which are to a certain extent interchangeable, and beer-drenched pizza can be pleasant).

Still, this question doesn't beat the "Milkshape or 3DS Max?" question from a couple of months ago.
