Here in Brazil it's the law that when a male reaches 18 years of age,
he has to join the army. It just so happens that my 18th birthday is on
April 23. 1+1=2, I have to enlist. Even if I do get some spare time
(I doubt it), it won't be enough. I wish I could postpone my birthday to
next year, as I'm in the university right now (second period). I'm gonna
have to stop and then try to continue afterwords. That means 2 years
from now.
On the other hand, not everyone who enlists has to serve. So, there's
a chance I won't have to leave.
On the bright side, I get to hold a big gun!!! YAY!!

Over and out.

Can I see a demo now? [edit]Disregard, I saw the demo.

One thing I'm glad we don't have in the UK is compulsory military service.

Come to think of it, I've never understood the attraction of the army - get sent to some foreign country to be killed?

My cousin is currently serving in Iraq. He’s a sapper… (Ever played Minesweeper?).
He’s earning money for college so I guess it has it’s benefits.

You can join the army and not go to a foreign country :p

My sister and her husband have been in the armed forces for years and they both have office jobs. They still did all the regular training like everybody else but you can pick which direction you'd like to go. The pay is usually half-decent so I would do it if I had no other options.

There was a time when conscientious objector meant something. Now days, you probably still be drafted and forced to work in the kitchen.

Don't sweat it in the USA, I just heard on the radio that enlistment rates are higher than what the recruiters expected for all the branches in 2003 and it looks like this quarter is well on the way to being above average as well. It looks like we have plenty of volunteers.

Well it depends on if you care much about your country or not in times of strife . Plus, the salary's pretty good, if you can't find ANYTHING better (it beats McDonalds).

Sure does. And I get to hold a gun!!!
Part of the training requires killing a chicken/rabbit with your bare hands and cooking+eating it by a campfire.

Hey TKF15H, guess what, I also had to enlist on my birthday (I’m also Brazilian for those who don’t know). Anyway I’m just waiting for the selection process (never been happier about having a crappy knee!), which will take place in June (in my particular case).

I hope that by playing the “university card I can escape… If I can, I’ll just have to salute the flag…

If I can’t… Then as TKF15H said there’s CPOR it should mean: “reserve officer’s preparatory course…

Otherwise I’m in real trouble…

The pay for the Royal Marine Army (British Army not the TA that most sign up to) is suppose to be pretty decent.
I know the Royal Air Force pay is pretty damn decent;
£300/week in basic training lasts 6weeks, then you do tour training (this is before you select what you want to do) another 3months at £550/week... when you finally make officer status you start earning £650/week, i believe that steadily increases as your rank does but i never got that far.

That is all Tax Excempt (armed personel are not taxxed on thier wages), not to mention you don't have to pay for food/room/clothes/etc... for work, unless you need extra kit. Which isn't exceedingly expensive but is actually enough for people in the army to bitch because the equippment they're given atm isn't upto scratch.
This said if you serve in the British Army you are more likely to see live combat within a 3 year tour than any other armed forces. (mainly because the British Army make the bulk of the UN forces)

But actually seeing live combat is still pretty slim. You get to travel for free and are trained to use alot of machinary that give you alot of qualifications should you choose to leave.
The Vehicle License for example will allow you to drive HGVs, you can study for college degree's and such with hands-on experience.

It's a job like any other. Personally I think anyone who becomes a Policeman, particularly in Colombia/Brazil/United States is far more insane. Particularly as the pay is often aweful.
And at the end of the day they're almost the same job, one is just one a global scale rather than neighbourhood scale.

2 years? That's a looong time.

we have such system here in Finland, but I guess it's a bit more flexible than yours. For starters, you can postpone the army till your 27, if you have good reasons. (studying at university usually is enough) And the time you have to be at the army is 6-12 months, depending little on what you'll have to do there, and if they choose you to go to the 'leader' trainings. (you can't say no!)

then there's people like me who like their normal lives. I'm actually serving my country right now, thing is, I'm working... just like any regular fella. I work at tech-support in a local hospital. The downsides are that the whole thing lasts for 13 months and you'll have to get used to the fact that every armyfella will hate you.
actually there's always the third option, which is jail. It's not that bad, really. you get accommodation, free food, tv ... so on. And you might even get the weekends off. just like in army. (the only thing about that is that it leaves a nasty mark on your records)

Really? You still have compulsary enlistment? Even when we had it, am pretty sure you could get out of it because of education (University). But it was a long time ago.

My family left Italy when I was kid because my Mum was pregnant, and they didn't want to much around with the army at 18 effort. And we went to Wales.... heh, and no we didn't abandon our country just for that; my dad was in the RAF and we were on an american air base for a few years. Just went back to Wales. It was that or Austria apparently. Git...

From my limited viewpoint (ie. from what I've heard from my dad, and some friends), the pay in the UK armed forces is adequate. No great shakes, but it gets you by. But the retirement figures are pretty good. Whereas I expect no more than (tops) a gold watch and a quick boot up the jacksy (computer company), the armed forces can expect tens of thousands of pounds (roughly divide by 2 for dollars) for a decent stint. My dad got about £20k lumpsum and a decent pension (which goes up when he reaches 65) for about 20 odd years. And this was mid eighties. Another friend of mine knows someone who left the Navy after 10 years or so and got £30k+ about 5 years ago. Not too shabby.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

Yes, the pay isn't too bad once you start climbing up the ranks, but to start with it looks pretty poor... And dont expect much support (or supplies) from the Government...

85 dollars a month! A MONTH! talk about compulsory ...

No, sadly (very sadly) I have a smaller brother.

Today I finished the signing up process, now I just have to wait and see what will happen. If I knew they didn't pick sole-heirs (sounded better than only-children) something would have happend to my brother long ago.

Last time I checked, Brazil didn't have the men (country) and possibly (no offense) guts (leadership) to depose one of the vilest, most brutal regimes in the history of this planet . Last I checked, they hadn't uncovered 300,000 corpses of innocent civilians in mass graves in the foreign country they haven't occupied. And yes, we're sticking to our choise and helping uphold the new Iraqi government in a situation where they don't have the manpower to keep the country anywhere near stable. And we're taking losses because of it, but we're not backing down. We americans did that at the directive of our excellent president GWB.

No offense to Brazil . I don't know a thing about them except they probaly don't have the men to pull of what we're doing given the size of the country... that's all.

I don't get the big deal. Why not just move?
I used to live in Israel 6 years ago and my parents decited to move to Canada. (Didn't like the bombings and war. Figure that.)
You are forced to join the army at 16 (don't know what it's ike now).

Anyway I had a friend there who fled to California (US) on his 16th birthday. Hehe! So long, suckers!

sort of, but not really. all eighteen year old males have to sign up for the "selective service". if you don't you can't take out loans, get credit cards, buy a home and possibly get jail time. the reason for it is so that if conscription ever becomes necessary again, it can be achieved easily. but the likelihood of conscription ever coming back any time soon is very very slim. I believe US has one of the largest standing militaries in the world (well, we're not standing anymore, but you know what I mean).

I myself am considering joining the US Navy (and no it's not gay, lol). They have this program where they pay for four years of college and you have to serve for four years active and four years inactive, and you go in as an officer, so it's pretty sweet. But i got to be careful, make sure they're giving me what it sounds like they're giving me. Hard decision to make though, but it would be fun to fire all those big guns, lol.

I'd say it probaly depends. Putting myself in the shoes of a fashist/fanatic leader who wants to kill all his enemies/needs all the population to remain independant, I would have the following options:

Kill everyone who does too badly-- this gives them a motive to do well too! Likely option for the evil leaders.

Dishonorable discharge, various legal and professional black marks. Good option overall. Motive for doing well but nothing too nasty for those who don't.

Let them go without any trouble. Why do that

Killswitch, if you fail to do the assignments in army, there are usually punishments for that. More jobs, no weekends off and so on...
around here you can quit the army, but you'll still have to serve the country. National service (or whatever it's called) is what you'll get... and that's what I'm doing now. But I never went to the army.

And what's even more funny is that even though you wouldn't score well on the tests they make in the army, they might still pick you up for the extra training. against your will. that might mean 6 more months for you. Bright side would be that you could get to command others to do the dirty work while you just hang around.

@TKF15H

I hope you enjoy the squady boxing. Don't do what everyone does and go in swinging. Get out of the way of his punches, and go for his chin. Proving your worth in squady boxing is the best way to get on the good side of your sergeant major.

On the subject of the army, there are a lot of people in my family who have been, or still are in the army, from various ranks and regiments, and I can honestly say I have no desires to follow in their footsteps.

I will make better money outside of the army, and I'm much less likely to stand on a landmine.

hey, I'm not in the army yet. I just made the sign-up process, and I've just been told that in May I'll actually start. That is, if the "university card" doesn't do the trick.

I've already started training for when I'm actually in. UT2k4!!

Look, it's really simple in the U.S. If your gay and you openly admit it you can't join. Although it doesn't always get you kicked out (like when they know your just trying to) but if you tell your CO that you think the other soldiers/Marines or whatever are giving you a hard time cause they all know your gay, you'll be out in days.

Off the topic but I was just wondering if there's cattle in NY somewhere? I've never been there. Funny cause there's no Camel ciggerittes here in Iraq where all their stuffed animals are camels.
