do sprites collide with the black, invisible bit of another sprite or the visible bit?

yes it collide the invisible bit, but if u use set sprite you can make a backsave so it will get rid of that bit.

syntax:
set sprite[sprite no.],1,1

second slot is for the backave and the third for transparency

No it will not collide with the invisible bit. This only happens in DBPro not DBC

you are both wrong.

It can collide with either bit, because there are two commands.

The SPRITE HIT() command uses the invisible bit.
the SPRITE COLLISION command uses the Actual Sprites.
