What happened to the female coding prescence in this community? It seems so male dominated. There used to be a handful of girls here but they all disappeared. There should be some kind of initiative to get more girls into coding - its fun!!!

In reality there have never been more than a handful of female coders here. Their current population of 0 is entirely within the observed bell curve.

The only two developers that come to mind right now are 3Beth and Marina over in the Kreallian threads on the team request forum. Don't scare them away by drooling in front of them. Okay?

I think their Sims-ish sci-fi title has a lot of potential.

The Kreallian posts are nice since they are more game design oriented than the normal new comer game requests.

If i felt generous list numerous female users; but i'm not.
There might seem that there isn't a very good ratio of Guy:Gals around here but believe me there are more than you realise.

Most aren't as open about letting you know as others because of how guys in programming forums react.
Typical 'It's a girl! Must try to get laid over the internet' kinda reaction.

Lady Ice, Randi, Rose/Cathrine, Bunni, Trina, etc... are probably the most obvious; there are even some here that you seem to think are guys who are gals. but who cares we're all here for making bedroom games, it's not a nerd dating service.

Awwwlrighty then. And perhaps now we see why there are as many women in IT as there are airhockey tables in the Sahara.

In the first year of my degree there were about 180 students with 4 "females" - I use the term "female" because I'd like to draw the distiction between them and girls. Although, in the 2nd and 3rd year, there was just *one* very cute girl.

Oh dear - and now my girlfriend is looking over my shoulder. Now look what you've gotten me into.

The difference with Ermes was mostly cultural, I dont think he realised how sexist he was being to British / American pallettes. After all he was from a peasant country.

Ooops, I think I was just racist...

I don't get it...if you guys want girls so much, why not just *get* a girlfriend?

That way it won't matter if there are or not any girls on the forums.

Here in my country, there is a good number of females who are in IT schools, but most of them end up as cashiers or as secretaries for hire. Not many of them are into hardcore programming. Late nights must be bad for their complexion...

Well, this is an interesting post.

I know of a couple of female programmers on these forums ( most were only here for a very short time though ).

First person that springs to mind is Debbie McDowell. ( I personally help her with code so she can avoid the forums all together, which is her personal choice ).

Raven's post was right on the mark too. I'd say there's alot more female coders on these forums than they care to say, because of the sexism that could sprout from it.
Sure, it's rare to have a female coder pop up and say "Hey, I'm a girl", but when they do, they shouldn't be treated differently just cos they're girls ( which does happen )

Ok, now I'm rambling...

Jess.

PS. Megaton, Who say's most of the people on these forums are already married, or already have girlfriends/boyfriends?

Well, i think when someone reveals themselve as a girl on the internet, for some reason a bunch of horney lonely morons get the idea that she's automatically a hot babe sitting there with nothing better to do than to let you watch her webcam.

So I think most girls only let people they have known for a while know that.

I'm married with children, so I figure that I probably have that father/mentor mode of thought going and would like for all developers to be successful and feel welcome here.

Exactly my point! Does no one listen to me? (wait, I know the answer to that)

Quote: "PS. Megaton, Who say's most of the people on these forums are already married, or already have girlfriends/boyfriends?"

I did not say that! Where are you getting this? I am saying this is a PROGRAMMING forum. Not a dating/random hangout forum. Both genders are allowed here, doesn't matter but there are actual places to get girlfriends (or boyfriends)...like...outdoors! (e.g places like school and others where you get to meet people) so leave the DBP forums to the programming.

I agree with Megaton, quite frankly it isnt that important if there are female coders here or not. This is a place for programming and computer talk, not a place where you try to get on a date with someone, so the gender of people here isn't that important at all. There are chat rooms and outside places where that may matter, but as far as I know the gender of a person did not make them any better or worse of a programmer. Although we could go into a huge debate "girls are smarter than boys" blabla, the gender of the people here is still completely irrelevant to the topic of this website. Other forums may do that, but I'd like to see this one stay as unprejudiced as possible. Too many newbs with no respect for others could use the fact that someone here is a girl to verbally attack them or insult them or worse. So I think its best to not worry about this topic in the first place.

I'm a girl!

I don't show my face here very often because I live with 'Scraggle' so any help I need I get from him and if he doesn't know the answer he asks on here. Which is why I don't ask much.

Anyway, just thought I'd let you know there is at least one female here

Girl coders aren't all bad. Reaperman's daughter was very impressive at her age (talent must run in the family... gah who am I flattering...).

I just get pissed when I see thread topics along the lines of "Somebody please help me with my code coz I'm a girl!" Some of them start the sexism thing all by themselves.

I can't imagine a couple of two programmers... I wonder how many times they'll see each other in a week or month...

As I see all of the posts, here are my opinions:

Girl..... Boy...... So what??? We're here to program, not to know a person's gender or something..... There shouldn't be any relationships here.....

But if there would be girls here in the forum, don't treat them like we're better than them, we're equal.....

Just get a Girlfriend????? Don't treat girls are just trophies for men, and don't treat relationships are just games or plays.....

(You see, I got 3 big sis and I don't have any GFs..... )

I liked Randi, but she was a tease (c'mon an avatar with her in her bra - here!, no wonder every one of her threads turned to testosterone hell!) - I hope she's still making her strange creepy games.

I reckon Rose made a bigger impact on Raven than this forum, I reckon the only female DB oldbie would be Multi, she coded the equilibrium demos but abandoned DB some time ago.

Personally I've never met a female who was even clued up about computers, never mind programming. On the other hand, I haven't met many coders in general, certainly never an indi developer. I just don't think coding is 'sold' to girls as much as it could be, it is very creative and not totally difficult with DB - if they stopped chewing their hair in computer class and IT teachers took them seriously it might be a different story. Of course if I stopped watching the girls in computer class and took the teacher seriously I might have learned something!.
