What images are you using for the particles? You might want to try circular "spots" (transparent PNG files work best) instead of the square image used at the moment, which looks a little unnatural.

The beta version will be online shortly, I am looking for testers who have good internet connections as the file size is very large and who could spare 15 mins to play the game to the end to post feedback/views.

Looks absolutley brilliant mate! Can you ad normal mapping now? That would make it so brilliant. If you have PShop and the right plugin, just get the model textures and convert them to a normal map an wala, you have smooth shaded people

Ok. I downloaded and played for a few minutes (I'm at work). First, a question. Are you running Full screen exclusive, or full windowed?

Critisims:
1. Framerate was pretty low. It made the game hard to play.
2. Can still run through walls of buildings (I'm sure you know this one)
3. No crosshair that I can see. Makes it hard to target
4. Kinda dark... Any way you can add a gamma adjustment?

It is still in Beta, so that's cool.

Praises:
1. Models look great, and levels look good too!
2. The in-game instructions as to what to do next are cool (can look better, but very nice feature)
3. Gameplay is pretty good (hard to really tell with low framerate)...

Dude, so far, this game rocks. I think that in time (and if you stick with it) this will shape up to be a great demonstration of what DBPro can do.

Thanks TheOneRing for testing it. I think the exe was created with Windowed - Full Screen mode selected, the display mode is 1024 x 768.

a map would be nice. and the game froze up the first time i tried to play it, after i opened a menu


One more thing. THE CAMERA ROCKED. I love going through th arches.


oh yeah, and the skeloten death sound is ANNOYING

To fix the fram rate problem i would make everything be controlled by time

Just a little tip to increase frame rate - the shadows are set to on as default on the main character, although they may not work on some graphics cards, if you go into the options menu and turn the shadows off this should help increase the frame rate a little.

Pro:

-Very Scary feel
-nice models

Con:
-took a LONG time to load
-kinda dificult(for a low level gamer(my cousin tied it to))
-you can't hurt things until your close to them.
-not much of a story

Would you be willing to try something? If you would compile it with Full Screen Exclusive mode (say 800x600 or 1024x768 16-bit) I would be very happy to download and try it. I'm at a T1 connection, so it doesn't take long to download.

I just want to see if there are any changes in framerate. My average framerate now is 18 fps... ouch...

I had a chance to play the game this morning (for about 5-10 minutes), so here are some comments for you:

GRAPHICS- Excellent! a little dark on my screen, but otherwise impressive!

CONTROLS - a little sluggish... I would like the ability to move backward... unless I missed something in the controls

MUSIC / SOUND - excellent! the opening song especially set the modd well.

INTERFACE - simple but effective... overall very nice!

OVERALL - excellent start. the game ran a bit sluggish for me until I turned off the shadows (which didn't really look that great in the first place), and then it perked up. I think the use of particles was a bit overdone, but toned down could be very cool.

also the camera collision was a little iffy, it kept finding it's way into walls

overall great start, I'll try playing it some more, and I also hope to see more updates!!

Your game was great. Some points that stand out:

*Music in the beginning was beautiful--who did it?
*Dynamic lighting added to the atmosphere
*Controls, while they had their faults, served their purpose and handled nicely
*The ambient sound was of high quality, set the mood well
*The models you picked fit well together stylistically
*Overall had a professional look, great job--Did I see Beware the Moon in a webring with Lionhead's The Movies?


Some things to consider:

*Backwards movement, we'd like to be able to run away while shooting guys at the same time
*The animations played pretty slow, even on a Pentium 4 HT 3.2ghz, Nvidia Geofrce fx 5200 128mb, 1024 mb ram. Try adding the options of changing the screen resolution and animation interpolation to improve performance.
*Clearer plot/clearer goals early in the game
*Less sparks when you hit a lamp post, kills speed

Same here, my PC seemed to have frozen when I pressed enter on the start menu. Also took about 5 mins to load the game up.

BTM PERFORMANCE RESULTS:

I have tested the game on my pc to see if the changes have increased the speed of the game as this was the number one complaint of the original beta version.

- 30 - 40 seconds to load game: this was originally over 2mins so that is much quicker.
- Frames on 800x600x16 were up to 50 FPS, whereas originally, with the game running in 1024x768x32 mode frames were around 15-20

My specs are:
AMD Athlon 2400 GHZ Processor
512 Ram
128 MB Radeon ATI 9600 Graphics Card



Of course these figures will increase or decrease depending on your system specs. I will create a new exe with all the media files and zip it up so the download size will be smaller, expect a new download next week.

NEW GAME

Whilst waiting for feedback on Beta 2 of BEWARE THE MOON I have started work on my next game.

Introducing SNOW ISLAND:
On a routine military operation the weather takes a turn for the worst resulting in a crash landing. With all other crew members down and no method to contact the outside you are stranded on Snow Island - an Island made of snow, although is it uninhabited, what will you find and will you survive.

Just had to say that I played the beta2 (of Beware the Moon) and it was great!
Although some of the game is a bit rough around the edges,
the music and atmosphere is awesome! Better than many commercial games I've played.
There's a couple of times I nearly jumped out of my seat (sneaky monsters)! I'd keep polishing this one.

Just played beware the moon 2 beta...must say, I was pretty impressed! Minus the fact that you could walk through a few walls, it was sorta choppy here and there, and I didn't feel there was enough ammo -- was a good game. Hope you continue to work on it.

i just posted to say, dont u see all that blank space in your world... well i think you realy need to fill it with somthing... like crates or other objects such as a broken wagon a chests.... barrels.... or anything else just plz get rid of some of that blank space...

im formaly non as hill billy.... and so i got a virus and thats why you havnt got ur model... any way there is alot of blank space, Everywere and i think it would look more atractive if u put more stuff.

hilly billy, now i know who you are, heres the map of the village entrance, you start at the purple dot, to start the game walk up to the grey dot (a crew member) and he will show you into the village, you continue the exploration from there, although as you can see from the map if you do not enter the village properly you'll just be walking around a blank space, but inside the corridors they are a little bare, so some models would be great for the next version, cheers mate.

BigBrother2000,

Am I correct in assuming you don't have an editor for this game, and that you're just sort of making it as you go? If this is the case then I'd really suggest making an editor. It'll make things a lot easier in the long run.

You also really, really need to do some work on optimization. I'm not sure how the game runs on your computer but on mine it's ludicrously slow (P4 1.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro). Rather than merely using fog as a trick to increase performance, perhaps you'll consider actually hiding what's not visible to the camera (assuming that you haven't done so yet)?

Additionally, it's my opinion that there should be more of an indication that you're losing health. All too often I'd be running around and get attacked by one of those mummy things. Then, I'd kill it, and later realize that I'm down to 16% or so. If you're going to allow damage to come that easily, there needs to be more health.

One last note -- particle effects. Way too chunky, IMHO.

My two cents. (More like twenty dollars, I know )
