This might not sound too clear but here it goes!
I've seen something in a matrix editor where you control a 2x2 grid
(I suppose it could be any size) which molds itself around the matrix as it moves.

Any ideas on how to do this?

make a second matrix the same tile size that is 2x2, set the wireframe on then move it about and as you do set the tile heights to the ground height plus a bit (so it is above the ground rather than in or under it), so what you see is a wireframe that has the same shape as the terrain under it, but very slightly higher so you can see it clearly.
