Determine everything that you need to know in order to reload a game from its previous state. charater coordinates, rotation, dead enemies, live enemies, score, inventory items, money, etc...

The write all that data to a file.

How exactly could that work if once the program is exited the data resets itself?
Just asking, cuz' I wouldn't be the one to say who's right and who's wrong, since I'm a noob, but it's a logical idea.

You write data to a file, that file exists outside of DB. Close your game, and the file you created is still on your harddrive. Check out this tutorial I wrote.
