Blender3d will automatically export to a supported format I believe. If not then there should be a plugin on the Blender page that will allow you to export to at least a lightwave .obj.

Gmax is tough though. There is absolutely no way to export animation from gmax. However you can get Tempest or something like it to export a .md3 of your model, then use 3d Exploration to convert it to a .3ds or .x.

You can find 3d Exploration here:
http://www.dsmith.gmaxsupport.com/downloaditems/quick3D_Pro_4_setup.exe

I know gmax is an ideal application to use being so like 3ds Max, the pro standard. But I've been down the road with it and it's a pain in the butt trying to use it commercially. I finally just said to heck with it and bought gameSpace to get similar advanced features for only $300.

I know what you mean about Blender, it's sitting on my hard drive, never being put to any use because of its complexity. Tempest is a modding pack for Quake to use with gameSace, basically it exports .md3 and other common Quake 3d formats. Mostly you'll need it for .md3. You can download it at http://gmaxsupport.com/html/download.asp. This will export your model(unanimated, I haven't found a way to export animation, but there was supposed to be some guy named Npherno who could do it) to a .md3. Then you use 3d Exploration from the link I gave you above, select yourmodel.md3, and File>Save As and switch the export format to .x and adjust the settings and voila! Model ready to load into db, of course you might want to first export it to a more lenient format like .3ds or .obj and then open it in one of the freeware modellers you can get out of Darkguy's thread "Game Programming Kit for Beginners" to make sure everything turned out alright.
