I know what you mean about Blender, it's sitting on my hard drive, never being put to any use because of its complexity. Tempest is a modding pack for Quake to use with gameSace, basically it exports .md3 and other common Quake 3d formats. Mostly you'll need it for .md3. You can download it at
http://gmaxsupport.com/html/download.asp. This will export your model(unanimated, I haven't found a way to export animation, but there was supposed to be some guy named Npherno who could do it) to a .md3. Then you use 3d Exploration from the link I gave you above, select yourmodel.md3, and File>Save As and switch the export format to .x and adjust the settings and voila! Model ready to load into db, of course you might want to first export it to a more lenient format like .3ds or .obj and then open it in one of the freeware modellers you can get out of Darkguy's thread "Game Programming Kit for Beginners" to make sure everything turned out alright.
