Well does it? or do model limbs have to be separated from each other in order for the object to be animatable?

It supports animation within 3D models. So if you create an animation sequence in your modeller, and export it with the model, you can PLAY ANIMATION.

You can also make a model with limbs and animate it in code.

You can make limb animation within a 3d modeller and export to a .x and use PLAY OBJECT on that, or for something even prettier you can rig up your animation with bones and all that to get nice mesh deformation and then when you export to .x you should be able to replace the bone data with raw vertex animation and it will play nice and smooth in DBC.
