what country are u in mate?

im sure TGC would love to hear where the product is being used as an educational tool

Dang, I hope my school signs up for this. Perhaps I could recommend it to them. Easy A for me. Heck, I'd teach a dark basic class for an extra credit. Just need to whip out a couple snippets showing how much math and logic is used and I'm sure they'll be convinced...

Anyway, good news for you, and good news for TGC.

I'll have to talk with my tech teachers about it. It'd be an easy A for me too

On a different note (although its a close note, maybe a sharp?), I got my 9th grade schedule... it SUCKS. I'm barely with any of my friends. So I'm going to work very hard this year and make sure i'm in every advanced class their is next year. This may mean a decline in my DBP use But DBP is easy, its all in my memory now, and I will never forget it.

Same with me except Dark Basic Pro.
I'm OK.
I know how to do a lot of stuff(in 3d).
I don't know anything about multiplayer and memblocks.

Yeah QBASIC is really really slow. I made a pong game back about a year or so ago and I just changed it over to DBP and it ran so fast I had to time sync it. I'm just wondering where they found a teacher who knows DB well enough to teach it to its fullest. I hope he/she doesn't just go through the manual. Good luck.

Hey, don't knock QBasic it's still one of the languages I use the most at work. I use it for quick DOS programming because our instruments have small amounts of RAM so for a quick fix I use QBasic because I'm usually too lazy to use C.

We use QBASIC to run some of our machines at work too. Its really stable but thats all I'll give it. I am thinking of upgrading them from those 486 computers to calculators though

I think that learning higher level languases (no offence TGC staff) such as C++, that way when you learn basic level languages they come more naturaly.

I did that, I learned C++ then Db, then DBpro, and next will be VB, then C, then more C++, and then what ever new language is made between now and then.

You have it completely the wrong way around. BASIC languages come easily anyway, and then they make it a LOT easier when you move onto C++ because you already know the theory behind it (variables, loops, conditional statements, etc), so in fact, in most cases it would probably be better to learn a BASIC first.

Believe it or not, without DBP's TPC support, QB would have several features that DB wouldn't be able to do.

QBasic has features that i've only seen PureBasic and RealBasic have.

If you want to warn anyone away from it perhaps you should post some QBasic code. C is far easier to understand imo than QBasic.

As Exeat said though, learning a Basic first then moving onto C is one of the easiest routes.
Personally I would recommend learning PureBasic / Dark Basic Professional first as both have very close structure styles to C, when you move up you'll find you'll simply be learning the 'extensions' and syntax rather than coding practises.

Considering that effective *everything* you will do in C/C++/C# is library based, more so the later the variation you use... you'll find that C-Based languages are far more about remembering functions, libraries and header files for them.

Basic's tend to be more well rounded with 'universal' features you come to expect.

I wont be doing any DBP in school. I am going to college to do my Java, C++ and so on for my computer science degree. And since i practice my Java pretty much every day, which is cool I am getting very good at it.

PHP Is also good to learn. It helped me.

Actually, C++ is usally a BAD thing to teach students. While it is one of the most important languages to know (because it's pretty much used for everything) studies have shown that teaching C++ to beginning programmers is too confusing and causes most students to give up on programming afterwards. Personally, I think too much emphasis is placed on object oriented programming in computer education. I know people who are graduating soon and won't be able to get a job anywhere because they just know Java. However, I don't think that there's necessarily a "perfect" teaching language for intro programming; Pascal's too flawed, Java doesn't prepare you for the real world, C++ can be too confusing, and most other languages are either too platform dependant, confusing, or parts necessary for teaching beginners. Of the languages I think are simply "OK" for teaching are D, Euphoria, Eiffel, Java, and structured BASIC. But each has it's glaring flaws. Maybe I'll have to write a teaching language someday or something.

Also, a fun QBasic and games fact. Did you know the first version of the BUILD engine used in Duke Nukem 3D was written in QBasic and ported to C afterwards? In fact, Ken Silverman says he still uses (and encourages the use of) QBasic most of the time because it's easier to understand complex graphics algorithms in.

Well, it's been done. Pascal was originally written to teach people how to program. Now it's improved into Object Pascal though...

Guess you're not a pascal fan then. I'd like to try out D sometime anyhow.

There is a teaching language, PDL.

http://info.astrian.net/jargon/terms/p/PDL.html

The USAF used to swear by PDL and flow charting during tech school. I have no idea if they have updated their intro programming classes or not. But, it would not surprise me if they are still teaching/using it.

While the definition dogs PDL, it is one of the few computer languages you can learn without a computer (because no computer can compile PDL.)

Well, I just got an Email from my university's game development club and we've gotten 10 free licenses for DBC plus a few copies of DBPro. This'll be a lot easier than using the trial version which is what we did for last year's workshops. Downside is they want me to teach a workshop every 2 weeks which will conflict with my training schedule with the fencing team and the club president and treasurer are graduating soon and they are the only other people who know DB besides me (we actually met at the first DBPro convention sponsored by RGT a few years ago). So I'm not going to have any free time when the semester starts *sighz0rz*.

If you have a very bad rep, then you have to pay me $50 for each answer I give you(and you must give it to me before I answer).

If your rep is worse than that, I'll lie about the answers.

And if your rep even worse, you'll get banned.

If it's even worse that that, you'll be banned on day 2 on everything you visit and you are cursed forever.

Not to me.
To get your real rep, ask a lot of the fourm members what they think your rep is, then avrage it up.

I would segest starting a thread with a post like this:
"
I want to know my reputation.
Please vote on what you think of me by replying.
Reply only with the answers:
Great
Good
OK
Bad
Very Bad
Who Are You?
Only One Vote Per Person.
"
Then get the % of all the choices and the one wth the highest % is your rep.
