Many moons ago, about the year and half mark after EQ was released, Paramount gave the rights to Verant and Sony to make a Star Trek MMORPG, but after lackluster results from movies (I liked them tho), and a few other things, they never went forward.

I wish they would.

A star trek MMORPG would rule.

currently i've little time due school.
as it looks right now, if i add a few things, it would be demo ready.

the demo would be used to show some features, such as:
warp,slipstream/transwarp,power distribution, engaging the borg,
phasers,torpedos,few skills.

but it might be pointless to make, if an official star trek mmporg is being developed.

There is no startrek mmorg being made. They didnt go through with it due to crappy results from a movie that was released for it.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=4256

is a link saying that they've received money, and one of the games being worked on is one on the startrek license.

Well, still interested to see this game.

I will continue to make this game, since theirs will only be released at 2007, and from the information they've released, its very different from mine.

definately next week.
i'll have several days off, allowing me to hammer those couple of bugs, the A.I might be a little tricky.

after cleaing out those bugs, i'll add some "extras" such as voice-over. like, when the borg cube as spotted you, it will say "resistance is futile".
Your own ship, including voices of most of voyager's crew, janeway, tuvok, paris, seven, more, will say stuff according to the situation.

Actually, Paramount can do practically anything they want. I remember there was a free Trek based Palm Pilot game. They were getting in trouble, so they changed the names of the races, just a little. Paramount still didn't like it, so they had to drop the project and remove it from their website. Ouch.

Be careful when dealing with Star Trek stuff.

Oh yeah: The game look awesome! Now I really want to make a space game

Looks, impressive, screens look odd to me, but that's cuz I try to ignore most Trekky realted stuff, but if I knew more along Star Trex lines like some of these people I'd say, WOW! (Also, it looks better then alot of the commerical Star Trek games, I've seen, especially the new ones.

Update :
most known bugs have been fixed, here's the TO DO list before the demo could be released :
(1) fix the AI, so it won't move in circles.
(2) create a cool enviroment using the map editor.
(3) add more sounds
(4) add a chat display (like if you cannot equip a certain item, or an AI ship says something, it will desplay the message).

1 is the most crucial.

i'm too tired now, so i'll work on them tommorow morning.

btw, tell me what you think of this transwarp distortion effect (using set camera FOV), compared to previous transwarp images.
should the effect stay ? or you want to test it yourself in the demo, as you think get the "feeling" of it from the image.
when moving the mouse, everything distorts.

I like the new way.

On another note, after looking at that screen i've found a small distortion. if you look about a milimeter to the left of the text "transwarping to:etc": You'll see a line moving from top left to bottom right of the screen.

Same could be said on the bottom edge of the screen slightly up left of the speed control.(warp)

Also, i do think it would be better if you could post a demo to see the new transwarp.. or maybe even make an avi to post up

That way we could see it's effect.

Hi, you can easily make an avi file using the software Fraps downloadable on www.fraps.com. The shareware version gives the possibility to capture until 1 mn video.
It has been developed for DarkBasic, so you can start it while the game is in progress simply by clicking on F9...

Ok, i've recored an avi.
it's been low fps, but it's still viewable.

it's 4.21 megs zipped, in a divx codec.

but no free hosting site is willing to accept a file this size.
i'm still searching for one in the meantime.

No free hosting ?

*cough*www.dbspot.com*cough*

Well, I think Jimmy offers space for that reason : because Darkbasic programms take so much space.

Looks very good yes. There's one thing that bothers me just slightly.. As you see the warp tunnel coming toward you, and then it suddenly jumps right in.. It doesnt seem smooth enough a transition.

I know that it sort of starts coming at you slowly and then zooms into it in the shows and such, but perhaps there's a way of making it look just a little nicer..

One example would be, as the tunnel is coming forward, the speed of it coming towards you also increases until it's right over you. Instead of jumping into it.

Since there are no ships nearby to compare with, only big planets.
it's hard to tell you're actually moving other then looking at your speed meter.
the borg sphere is coming into the transwarp gate, the transwarp gate sit still and scales up.
It does give you the feel that it is coming towards you.

i will do something about that.

Ahhhhh..... in any case.. it still does seem to jump a little much.. perhaps a more graceful leap.. still, speeding it up going into the transwarp gate might do the trick.. but i dont know, i'm sure you'll figure something out, in any case, it looks good to me

ST BETA 1.1 has been released :

here's the link:

http://zokomoko.dbspot.com/STBETA1.1.ZIP

important:
i'm using DBP trial, and it has been crashing lately for no reason.
i'm assuming this is because i don't have enough memory (only 256 mb ram), so let's hope so.
It is not because of the code (i'm certain, it happened before with different programs), so if it crashes, try to close unneccesery applications.

instructions :
(1) download the file.
(2) extract the 2 files into some folder.
(3) run the setup.exe file.
(4) after installing, do not run the program from the desktop icon it creates !, it won't work (the shortcut doesn't work), instead go to the folder, and run it from "ST BETA 1.1.exe" file.

It shows a loading screen, after it loads everything, it might crash, so try a few more times, it will eventually run.

stuff you can do at the demo:
you're a borg sphere, you can fire (phaser, photon, assimilation beam, +multiple photon spread skill) at voyager but you can't damage it, and niether it can you.
Voyager will chase you, and attack you.
after you're tired of that, select the federation trading station (there are 2, so select the far one), and click warp, you will then start transwarping.

press 1,2,3,4,5,6 (the buttons on the right side of the keyboard, under numlock) to make the borg speak.

some interface is functional: "cargo","ship","tactical","engineering" (almost)

I could set it up to have many more ship, but again it crashed.
So either it's a DBP trial bug and it will only be resolved when i'll purchase the full version (in a couple of months), or it's a memory problem and i should upgrade my memory (it'll take time).

Please post any bugs, comments, or suggestions.

known issues:
(1) The "ship" window "collides" with the chat.

it worked but i had to put media player on. which i think is a bug with darkbasic.

it is too difficult to notice you are moving which could be avoided if you made the camera go furthur back the faster you are moving or something along those lines.

when the photon torpedos fired by voyager the sheid on the borg sphere arent affected.

on one of the menu's there is a problem with a picture it dosent go off after you clock close.

but other than that it is looking excelent.

Had no trouble running it at all. Looks quite nice, although Paramount may take acception to it.

From a Star Trek technical point of view, I dont think the Borgs warp condiuts are quite right (especially directly behind the sphere, as it's all green).

Next, I hope the number of crafts attacking the sphere will be increased - one lone star ship doesn't usually last long...

And will there be cubes in it ?

As a side note, if you could fit the Crystalline Entity in there somewhere, that'll be good. And the Prometheus as well...

you're right, i'll implement it, and maybe a starfield next to the side of ship.

Quote: "when warping the screen is green threwout i have to move the screen around to see the effect of warping.
"

why graphic card are you using? i've had this effect when trying it on a voodoo 3.
check if it works as seen on the video.
if not, it might be DBPRO trial compatibility issues (which might exist ?)

Quote: "but still a smashing game"

could you mention what actually worked ?

Quote: " when the photon torpedos fired by voyager the sheid on the borg sphere arent affected"

yes, that's not impelemented yet.

Quote: "on one of the menu's there is a problem with a picture it dosent go off after you clock close"

close buttons are not working right, you should click again on the menu button.

Quote: "Next, I hope the number of crafts attacking the sphere will be increased - one lone star ship doesn't usually last long..."

i increased the number, but it crashed.
this will probebly be implemented when i get the full version.

Quote: "And will there be cubes in it ?
"

over 9 types of cubes, 3 types of diamonds, 6 types of spheres, 5 types of tactical cubes, and 4 types of tactical spheres.
not to mention, other borg ships which are stunning, but don't show on the series and i can't remember their names.
again, if those crashes will be solved, all of them will be, plus you'll get to see the borg space !

Quote: "As a side note, if you could fit the Crystalline Entity in there somewhere, that'll be good. And the Prometheus as well..."

Crystalline Entity ? i don't think i've heard of that, but i'll search it.
I've the prometheus.

@did anyone experience crashes ? and what are your system specs ?

btw - when i ran the game, and pressed ctrl-alt-tab, it showed the CPU is being used 100%, is that good ?

i've 256 MB RAM, so i guess it's just my memory.

update :
(1)borg shields now appear when photon torpedos hit the borg sphere.
(2)camera moves away, when the ship's speed increases, and vice-versa.
(3)the "x" on the menus now work, and the "ship" menu doesn't collide with the chat interface anymore.

You are pretty near the limit of the minimum specs - whilst the program shouldn't crash out (should get at least a message), it would have trouble loading a large amount of 3D objects.

Is "Geoforce 3 ti 200" good?
I didn't have problems with it, but could this contribute to the crash ? (i.e. like low video memory ?, i don't realy know about hardware)
