Realy, I had 8 of them. They´re realy cute. Especial the males. If you decide to buy more than one male don´t put them in the same cage. There´ll kill each over. And never frighten the things. I can still see the bite marks now.

They do it all the time. They love it. Make sure to have a few lying around the cage.

I would get a male. They´ve got long hair and are the cutest hampsters I´ve ever seen. That reminds me. I want to get one of those ferrets. I´ll look into that.

Yeah, I had a Teddy-Bear Hamster. And yes, they do love tunneling and scurying through tubes. A lot of hamsters like to have a large play area, and it also keeps them more healthy from running around all day!

My best tips I can give:

* Make sure you can pick it up and hold it before you buy it. If the breeder will not let you pick it up first, DO NOT BUY! They are hiding something!

* This will also test to make sure they have a good personality. Some can have bad attitudes and be prone to biting! Also, try to find one that sits comfortably in your hands. Not one that tries to run away with all it's might!

* Make sure it is kinda chubby and squishy (don't squeeze too hard !!). They should have a little weight on them or they may be unhealthy.

All I can think of right now. They are a good low-maintanance pet. You just need to feed them and keep their cage clean! I know it sucks, but you must clean their cage every week, or it will get sick! Well, have fun and post some pics when you get it! Hope this helped!

Then you need to be even more careful! Try to find a breeder in your area instead. Do a search online for breeders in your area. They are much more trust-worthy and often have healthier pets, because they only deal with one kind of pet, and often do it out of love for that species.

Pet stores are there to make money. They have hunderds of pets to take care of, all with different needs (which no one store could completely understand). To top it all off, they often times employee people that do not give a damn about the animals, and obviously do not take care of them as they should.

Just saying, be careful! Pet stores do not have the best track record for rodents!

You could just grow your own hamsters. Go to your local flower shop and pick up some hamster seeds. Plant in moist potting soil and water every 47 second for an hour. It should come right up.

They don't really advertise. You have to find them. You would be dead-pressed to find a breeder with a huge neon sign and hours posted. Most are just animal lovers that got good at breeding animals, so they do it for extra cash. And do not be taken back if they start asking you questions. Most good breeders have an "interview" with the prospective buyer to make sure they are getting a good home. Do not worry about this! They are just making sure you are not buying them for snake food

My grandmother breeds poodles, so I am pretty familiar with the trade (lol). With rodents, it is essential to buy from a breeder and not a pet store if you want it to live for more than a month!

Hmmm. Maybe check out this in Sept:

I dunno. The whole "Game" thing kinda freaks me out. You may have to go with a pet store. Get a book about them (or do a lot of research on te net), and ask a lot of questions to make sure they know what they are doing. I know this sounds like a lot of work for a rodent, but they are living creatures that you can get quite attached to, and you surely don't want it to die in a month or two!

ohh i wanna buy a hamster now! Im pretty sure i can find a breeder. A bit ot but my mom buys hermit crabs from the pet store and keeps them alive for as long as she can we bought a hermit crab that had no limbs.
We had to feed it with a toothpick everyday. poor thing almost died because the pet store didnt care.

Those hermit crab stands in petstores make me SOOO mad!! People buy them, and keep them alive for about a year, then they die. The person thinks, "Oh well, I guess that's how long they live! He must have been old!" WRONG WRONG WRONG!

Hermit crabs live to be about 20 years old. People just don't know how to take care of them. I'm not talking about any one on this thread, as it sounds like you know what you are doing. I'm talking about the people who do NO research before buying them and just throw them in an tank and feed them once a day. They don't even know they need a mister! Oh well, I'll stop now...
