Well done Hamish!

I was wondering, you're obviously very clever - why did you do double award science?

I'm aiming for straight 10 A*s, well 10 if the teacher pulls his finger out and decides to enter us for that further maths.

Otherwise 9.

I just didn't like the idea of 9 periods of science a week, cos secondary school science is rather boring.

I'm doing the triple award and I only have 5 science periods a week (50 mins each). And I agree with El_Goorf it's not even worth putting in any effort for ICT at all, the hardest thing we've had to do so far is record a macro. And wait, omg wow! It's all done automatically.

But separate sciences is very respected when it comes to university compared to alternatives.

What do you want to do when you're older?

To be honest, GCSEs don't really count for much when it comes to university, only if you have the same A level results as someone else and they have to give one of you a place will they look at the GCSEs. Even then it's mainly the overall grades, I doubt whether it makes a difference whether you did triple of double science at GCSE level . Besides, double science is separate science, you have separate physics, chemistry and biology lessons, coursework and tests, just you get 2 overall GCSEs.

I'm probably going into something in physics kind of science, or computer science.

I didn't do ICT cos it seemed to be all word processing and technical jargon. I'm doing computing at A-Level though.

These English tests... I don't get 'em, I don't get 'em at all .

But you obviously did very well, Hamish.

On my last big test, the end-of-last-year school test we homeschoolers have to do, my total battery mean was 98%. Most of the subjects were 99%... but I won't say what pulled it down because it's too embarassing .

Cool! I'd like to do COmputer Science at Cambridge.

lol, tell me about GCSE ICT (I haven't actually done it, just looked at it) it's all party invitations and spreadsheets

I've done the AS Computing course - it's basically teaching your Pascal nad Delphi (well the one I looked at was).
It looks really good, although I'm following Cambridge's advice which is to do Phys, Maths, FMaths and Chemistry to get on their course.

I can't wait - compiler design 0_0

French A
Maths A*
Classics B
Chemistry A*
Physics A*
Biology A*
Art A*
Drama A
English Literature A
English Language B

73 eucas points total.

I'm dissapointed in my Classics as I know if I'd had 15 more minutes I'd have got an A minimum (I knew ALL the material but I ran out of time in the exam). I'm just glad that I passed everything.

Congratulations to everyone who did well.

What do you do in drama gcse?

That's always puzzled me - why do so many schools not offer separate sciences? I would have though it'd be the default - it's sensible enough, no dodgy averaging.

I got:

Five people in my year got straight A*'s and 75% of all the results were A or A*.

I'm really pleased, especially with Maths where I got 99.7%

I missed the A* in RS by one mark due to my handwriting.

Congratulations to everyone on their results.

The good news is that GCSE is only of any use for getting onto A Levels. Your A Levels then determine your entry into Uni and from that point on can be effectively forgotten. Its then your Uni results that count.

Its all just one stepping stone after another.

Philip

Ah yes. The "they're useless" argument.

School is designed to give you as good a head start as possible, whatever your career.

Lots of careers involve maths.

Lots involve English.

Loads involve science in some form.

Some could involve modern languages.

That's why you're given a choice at 14 and 16 to choose a path to follow. Unfortunately for some that means taking the easiest, most relaxed looking GNVQs

While there is obviously the need to teach 5 year olds what a verb or an adjective is what is the point in *trying* to teach teenagers about 'A View From the Bridge' by Aurther Miller?

I actually like reading and writing, and I've considered a career in it (although my spelling/handwriting is really bad) but the things we have to 'learn' in English are rediculos. Teenagers have no intrest in Aurhter Miller, even I thought it was the most boring play I've ever had to sleep through - if you haven't read/seen it don't its a terrible story that's terribly written.

English would be far more effective if they actually tought relevant things, like how to talk properly. For anyone who doesn't live in the UK you probally won't get this next bit. Has anyone noticeced how the tide of 'rude boy ganstas' has completely destoryed everything? Hardly anyone in my year can string together a proper sentance or even know what a conjuntive is. It's seriously annoying, espicially when I get called posh because I can speak properly I live in North London for god's sake I hardly speak BBC English!

In short all GCSEs are crap, today I spent 6.5 hours doing my Electronics coursework and I'm not even finished yet. Still repect to you guys who got the top grades.

I wish they would introduce foundation level programming as a GCSE subject, even if it was something like BASIC - at least it's better than learning the marvelous features that Word has to offer.

Bah, anything with "ICT" in it will be absolute rubbish. Tony has this idealistic vision of everybody usuing UKOnline nad knowing hwo to format a spreadsheet in Excel 97 - it's not gonna happen!

I don't know if my views are considered extreme - but what we needs are

a) less GCSEs with a return to more academic subjects
b) less people going to University
c) more specialist colleges set up for most careers

a lot of subjects your made to do not to learn but to appreciate in later life, ie, u might not like sport at school, but your made to do it at school to appreciate the olympics and league football more in later life, tho yeh, i agree, i dont want to be a writer or a poet when im older, so why should i be made to learn where to put a semi colon?

edit: the other day i started compiling a dossier of "if i ruled" and how i'd change/fix every problem in the world or at least the UK if i was prime miinister. i imagine by the end it will be yellowpages-thick, and nw gona be thicker, ive decided to extend the section on the education system- i'll post a link to it on th eofrums when i'm done

GCSEs have different tiers. There's the lower tier which is incredibly easier, and higher tier whic his more challenging There may be some inbetween too. Which tier did you take?

Quote: "Eh? How come?

Everyone should go to university. "

I have to disagree. (Please don't consider this discriminatory anybody)

The academically more able should g to university. There they take academic courses and follow academic paths.

Other people, for example, who don't want to take an academic course could go to specialist training colleges. eg. chefs attend cook school, nurses go to nurse training, bulders to go builder school etc.

What this governent doesn't understand is the solution to everything is not University. We need more specialist training colleges, not more University places. If you want to be a builder what do you do? A degree in brickwork?!? An apprenticeship would be a better option.

I finish with a quote:

Quote: "What's the point in Higher Education if everybody gets it?"

well most 6th form colleges (ie mine) only allow you in if you get a certain ammount of C's or above in GCSE's, and then will also sometimes require that if you want to study a particular subject you have to have certain required grades for it, ie to study physics then you need a B in both maths and science
