so, 4 mins until i have to leave the pc and watch this gr8 show, its like the jackass but science based. im askin what your favourite moments from the show are.

i think my favourite is the sub-sonic sound that gives people diahhrea (sp?), did any of u viewers try it out?

Ah, Brainiac. Top stuff. Just to be on the safe side I turned the sound down Was my best jeans....

I liked the bit where they got a load of Brianacs to touch an electric fence. Then tried mucking about with them. Stand in line holding hands, all standing on asbestos tiles. The one on the end held the electric fence, and the one on the other end stepped onto the grass. Stuff like that. Was very funny.

Oh, and fat guy/ thin guy is also really funny.

That sound did nothing to me

My favourite moment was either the homemade hovercraft or the caravan blown up when the guy charged himself up with static.

Isn't the "sound" the legendary one which loosens your bowels? There was a story years ago about some radio station in europe that broadcast it (doubt if Brainiacs actually did) and caused all their listeners to have bowel movements. ie. they filled their cegs. Good old mucking around with sound. Anyone remember that picture from years ago of that bridge being warped (moved like a fast river) because of the sound of the wind through the structure or somesuch? Very very very likely, but possible with the exact cicumstances. Reminds me of a story from france, where this totally straight road was getting loads and loads of accidents. Turns out that it was *just* right at a certain time of the year, at a certain time of the day, with certain weather patterns, and the speed limit of the road, that basically the trees had grown to an level in the past couple of years where the sun would blink at a certain rate (going behind the trees) to cause people to have epilectic attacks. Tops. They put in a different speed limit and the problem went away.

Oh yeah, and yeah, that's the bridge.

Would be a cool drive to work on that bridge. Holding it together doing a tonne (100mph) would work the old 4x4 overtime methinks (think Subaru Turbo sport car effort, not lumpy school carrying enormous landrover sadness).

In fact every object has his own frequency to begin to warp ... so you can do it with anything
You just have to find the right settings and good material (which may be too expensive for most bridges)

They gave it the shape of a wing, so instead of fighting the wind it uses the wind to stay rigid (althgough ccan do so without it). I can't remember if it's this brigde that was the first to have this, but it's deffinatly what started it.

Sound had nothing to do with the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse. The wind and the badly designed/non-existant aerodynamics of the bridge caused the bridge roadway to begin oscillating whenever the wind of a certain speed steadily passed the bridge - eventually the bridge ripped itself apart due to the unforseen stresses.

human ears cant hear below 20Hz- just for anyone that missed that point.

theres other used for sub-sonic sound too. they did an experiment in a church where a low note was played on a pipe organ, and whenever that note was played, the mood of the ppl in the church suddenly became uber-somber, and they all cheered up when the not wasnt played, even though they couldnt hear the sound. some scientists reckon that the subconcius part of our brain can interpret sounds far bellow our conscius hearing level- well whatever, back to the topic of those lovelly women

and i wanna see them try out a floppy disk bomb too. maybe i should write in...

I know we could let the speakers send out some sounds with specific frequencies with QBASIC.

This was the command : SOUND x,y
x for the frequency
y for the time the sound shall be played

Got to this topic a bit late -

1. You can create infrasonic noise from your P.C. using any basic wave editor (there are free ones you can download). Just create a sine wave with a frequency of less than 20Hz and save as a .wav. Then play it through your speakers.

2. Sorry - this 'brown noise' idea is nonsense! I frequently use a range of infrasonic noises to demonstrate vibrations to whole classes of children - and we've never had any sticky moments! The principle is flawed in so many ways I don't know where to start.

thing is econo-speakers are cheap enough to only generate sounds well within human hearing range, same applies for the sound card probably, while the brown noise is outside it

Can't incredibly low frequency sounds give you brain damage or something? I know they can cause some sort of damage (apart from crapping yourself).
